Yes
this was sent to me by a mate, and I think that I would rather buy a postcard than do this.

This guy had to be a little off his rocker
This is a case of photographer photographs photographer. The following photographs were taken by photographer Hans van de Vorst at the Grand Canyon, Arizona. The descriptions are his own. The identity of the photographer IN the photos is unknown.

I was simply stunned seeing this guy standing on this solitary rock IN the Grand Canyon.
The canyon's depth is 900 meters here. The rock on the right is next to the canyon and safe.

Watching this guy in his thong sandals, with a camera and a tripod I asked myself 3 questions:

1. How did he climb that rock?
2. Why not take the sunset picture on that rock to the right, which is perfectly safe?
3. How will he get back

This is the point of no return.

After the sun set behind the canyon's horizon he packed his things (having only one hand available)
and prepared himself for the jump. This took about 2 minutes.
At that point he had the full attention of the crowd.

After that, he jumped on his thong sandals...
I repeat the canyon's depth is 900 meters here.

Now you can see that the adjacent rock is higher so he tried to land lower, which is quite steep
and tried to use his one hand to grab the rock.

We've come to the end of this little story. Look carefully at the photographer.
He has a camera, a tripod and also a plastic bag, all on his shoulder or in his left hand.
Only his right hand is available to grab the rock and the weight of his stuff is a problem.

He lands low in his flip flops both his right hand and right foot slips away...
At that moment I take this shot.

He pushes his body against the rock.
He waits for a few seconds, throws his stuff on the rock, climbs and walks away.

Is that on the North rim? I went to the south and didn't see any rock like that.

He should have taken a backpack. Suppose it would have been too easy then :)

I can't believe the stupidity of that guy!

why would he need to go down to that ledge when the view is the same from the main bit of the rock...sure this isn't a scam?

The power of PhotoShop? :naughty:

could be p/shopped I suppose, I would need a mary poppins type umbrella or even a parachute just to go to mather point and look over the edge.

The power of PhotoShop? :naughty:

Just what I was thinking. Looks like a different guy in the first pic as his jeans are a different colour. There is no way he could make a jump like that with all that equipment in one hand.

It is actually on snopes. While he is jumping and could easily lose his equimpent the most he would fall would be about 5 feet. So he might break something but he isn't going to die. STill not worth losing the equipment over.

I think there's some good photoshop work going on there!!!

I would.

Thanks for that Ct, I have sent the link to my mate, some of these photographers are worse than fishermen for exagerating.:bonk: He's still a lamer though, I mean who would chance that in flipflops?

The guy is a nutter all the same. :cuckoo:

Good thread though..

Must admit, doing bike racing/track day car racing, I've done some daft things and been in silly places. I think that I'm okay but even other togs and come up to me and said you really don't want to do that!!!

Think if I go back to motorsports photography, I'll buy the 300 to keep me further from the circuit :D

Carl.

I suppose it is all about faith. Like he said, it took two minutes to prepair for the jump. He knew it would kill him if something went wrong. Remember also that he now has a shot that no one else will have, and also the memory of having done it.

Personally I applaud (sp?) him, and respect and admire his determination to go that one step further for the thing that he enjoys most which I assume is photography :D. After all, some people might be able to create nearly the same shot from somewhere else, but you will never actually get there.

Kudos

Aye, looks more like 10-12ft, either way he's an idiot.

I was talking of the drop, not the distance he had to jump, so were the others I think m8 :)

Saw higher res versions of those same shots and the guy had a six pack of Budwiser (beer) in that white plastic bag.

:agree:

Can I ask a question?

Who got the most viewed shot? the guy on the cliff or the guy taking pictures of him. Looks like that photographer got the best shot in the end
