Hi All

How far from a fabric background do you need your subject to be to avoid seeing creases in the background? I'm using a speedlite and softbox for home portrait photography, with no direct light (apart from ambient) on the background. I have tried pulling the subjects about 4-6 feet in front of the background and widening the aperture, but still see creases in the background. Any hints on how to remove these (apart from pp)?

No easy answer to your question unfortunately, as it will depend on the fall off of the light, how far from the light to the background it is (to put the background to darkness), the aperture you're shooting out (to put the background out of focus) and how good your ironing is :-)

I would personally suggest buying a paper roll and save yourself a lot of hassle - sorry, I know that is not the answer to your question, but it is the best solution.

In order of ease:
  • Iron background
  • replace w paper background
  • light background to remove shadows in creases

Unless a fabric background is permanently mounted, it is useless, if it's been ironed out well and been put up and stretched out across the supports, it will be ok, if it's remaining in that position, if however it is something that is going to be folded after every use, you may as well forget it, unless you have lots of patience that is.

As has already been mentioned, paper is the way to go, or also vinyl :)

Thanks for the advice, maybe I should have asked before I spent £30 on material for backdrops! On the plus side my wife says she can make some nice curtains out of the material if I can't use it.....
