How does the old Canon 28-70 stack up against the new 24-70?

Yes
Anybody had any experience of the older version? Obviously it doesn`t go as wide, but other than that?

The reason for asking is that I`ve seen a 28-70 for what I consider reasonable money. I was wondering whether it`s worth spending the extra for a new version.

Neither is 24mm and I don't think the extra 4mm makes that much of a difference at that range.

Hi

Cant comment my self as i have a 24-70 and have never had the 28-70

Check out this review over at Fred Mirandas site he does a comparison when he reviews the 24-70

Check out

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/24-70-review.shtml

an early review that looks at the lenses in real world use.

Edit: very similar to the Fred Miranda review in method and results. Conclusion differs though as the 24-70 is noticeably sharper in the tests and is far less susceptible to vignetting on full frame.

I've got the 24-70L too and no real experience with the 28-70, I'm just commenting on the extra 4mm not really feeling that important to me personally.

But if the 28 isn't that sharp then that seems like more of an issue.

Looking at those reviews, there does seem to be an improvement in sharpness. The difference between the two is about £300. Hmm, have to think about that one.

I already have a 28-75 tamron, so I`m used to the focal length that the older one would provide. I`d have to agree, there wouldn`t be alot of real world difference I don`t think.
