How do you "read" this forum???

I'm just wondering how other people keep up with what is going on on TP? My main interest at the moment is rural landscapes so I always check that thread and I check my alerts, although often that just leads to unsubscribing from a thread where I have left a comment but then the thread has wandered off somewhere and I am no longer interested. I then usually have a scan through the titles in New Posts although there are usually so many of those I get bored after a couple of pages.

I am interested in keeping up with the photography scene in general and want to pick up pointers on things that may come in handy generally like portraiture or wild life. So how do you go about drinking from the fire-hose?
 
RSS feed and then add posts to reading list (in Safari).
 
Thanks for the replies, was just wondering if there were alternatives. I may take a look at the RSS feed but I guess that is really just new posts anyway
 
My routine is simply to look at three sections of the For Sale stuff, followed by Computer then Motorsports sections and finish off with New Posts.

I never subscribe to threads.
 
I log into the staff room, see who's been reported for acting like something purchased from snap on, deal with what I can, pick up a few toys that have been thrown out of prams, splat a few purveyors of little blue pills and slimming requisites, shovel up those dummies that have been spat out, then finally, about 12 hours later I check the POTY threads for anything interesting, then crawl into film and conventional for a bit of peace and quiet.

Ignoring parts, that's not a bad idea at all. One thing I do tend to do is look at the number of replies, for photos I might be interested in I look at the thread if it only has a few replies, on the basis that I have probably not looked at it before. For all the other stuff I tend to only look if it has more than a few replies because by that point it may be getting interesting.

One of the things that prompted me to post this thread was that there were two threads this morning that I am really interested in but would never have viewed unless I had spotted them in New Posts and as I said it's easy to miss stuff in new posts...

I do the same, but also once a thread gets past 25 replies I generally ignore it. By that time any sense has left the original topic and the discussion has degenerated into a meaningless meander through irrelevant comments.
 
Without meaning to sound too trite, I start at the top and work down. I open each section and see if any thread titles either intrigue me or if I've added anything to the thread, see if what I've offered was of help (and to check I haven't made a boo-boo!) I tend to ignore the sections that hold no interest to me and have the classifieds shrunk in an attempt to reduce my rampant GAS a little. If the forum is quite busy or there's a particularly interesting and active thread, I may go back to the top once I've reached the bottom and see if there are any new gems.
 
New posts, Alerts and OOF.
It's interesting to see how 'new posts' changes over the week. At the weekend there is a preponderance of birds, other times lovely children :eek:
As an aside, I think there should be a warning for people posting pics of kids so I can avoid them :)
 
I tend to look at the alerts for the threads I have posted in and then go to new posts and scroll down, clicking on threads that sound interesting or picture threads started by folks whose work I have thought is good.
 
Mine tends to be Alerts, I then dip into Talk Photography, Beginners, Equipment, Flash, OOF before diving into the TP52 thread, Sports and Wildlife section. If it's busy or I'm particularly bored I return to the beginning and start again :D

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to give @Nod 's top-down approach a go for a few days and see how it goes
 
In case anyone is interested, I've been trying a different approach for a few weeks and it seems to be working. I was mainly looking at new posts and being swamped; the new approach is basically to look at alerts first, then the forums in which I am mainly interested and read the posts with only a few replies on the basis I won't already have looked at these, then mark the individual forum as read. Having done that I look at new posts in case there is anything of interest elsewhere.

The new approach is a bit of a faff but hopefully helps me keep on top of the things I am interested in.
 
Generally Alerts and then new posts, sometimes a "lucky dip" into the sections if I still have any time to browse, just choose a section at random.
 
Alerts first, then subscribed forums to see if any interesting new thread titles have appeared.
