I am having trouble creating a decent watermark that cant be cloned out.

I tried simple thing like my name: Alan Miah.

But that is soo easy to clone, anyone can do it.

So, how do I go about doing a watermark with my name that I can put across a pic and be confident it wont be erased or cloned out?

It really depends entirely on the picture. Just create a fairly complex one that covers the whole page. Something using an arty farty font with lots of squiggles. Apart from that, any watermark is easy to clone out of the background of the image is fairly plain!

true.

I'm also thinking of something that wont totally ruin a pic

your best bet is just something small and insignificant linking to your website/flickr etc on the bottom of your image, and then just making the image low enough quality for people to not bother trying to steal it.

Agreed^

You can't have unclonable without destruction.
The idea is to have lots of the image covered so it won't be worth while spending the time and effort removing a water mark, so that means destroying the image pretty much.
I decided a small copyright watermark in a corner out of the way and ownership tags.
Its catch 22, put a big watermark obliterating the image and nobody will steal it, but then nobody will see it either, so what's the point..

If you keep the opacity really low for a watermark across the image, it shouldnt detract too much but will still be enough to identify it as yours and put a small readable one in the corner

Thanks, guys. I guess best way to go is fool about with an image.

Out of interest, anyone know a goof FREE watermark software. I seem to only come across trial versions, while the free ones a crap/cheap looking.

Picture Shark, seems to work ok, it doesn't integrate with anything though its stand alone, and you have to make your own watermark for it, but it does allow feathering and opacity control.

thanks. i had a look at picture shark a while back. i dont hav,e my own watermark yet. also, i seem to recall it doesn't have the most user friendly interface?

Its the simplest interface there is, maybe copy/paste is too simple, I dunno.
Its definitely basic..:)

GIMP is free. couldn't you just make a separate layer and adjust the opacity?
