How do you calibrate a printer?

Since I don't have £300 laying around to buy a colourmunki are there any other cheaper ways to calibrate a printer. I have a huey for the monitor but need to calibrate the printer too.
I don't paying out some money (up to £100 at a push)

The Spyder 2 Pro monitor calibrator will also profile your printer....costs around £120.

For many printing papers there are printer associated profiles available. I recall Ilford having some for download from their site for example.

Secondly, some paper suppliers offer a free profiling service when you buy their products. I use Fotospeed papers and their profiling service is very good.

Thirdly, even without the above, purchasing a bespoke profile for a particular paper/printer combination is not too expensive (depending on your understanding of expensive I suppose).

We use a company called Pure Profiles. Works very well. You download their colour chart print it off, send it back to them and they will send you a profile for your printer. Costs around £15.00.

I used Pure Profiles last year. They (He) was helpful beyond belief. (They) He tried everything to get some decent prints for me. I think, though, that it's not (their) his "proper job"; he (they) seeems to do it in the evening and unfortunately you can't speak to (him) them on the phone. It's email only.

While I did get some decent prints eventually, my set-up has since reverted to the muddy brown colour cast it had before the printer was profiled:'(.

I'm wondering what to do next.:thinking:
