The reason why I ask is I have seen various ways and means at different rugby matches and footy matches ...

I stick my 400mm straight on to the monopod and I don't use a head of any form of head. However I have seen people use ball and gimbal heads.

Having never used one for sport type things, wanted to know what approach you guys take and what benefits there are for each one.

Cheers guys!

I use a Manfrotto 234RC head with the clamp loose to allow movement in all directions.

Straight on the Monopod for me too :) - then havent got anything to mess with lol

I have a Manfrotto ball on mine just to give an extra couple of inches, at 6' 2" I always find monopods just a little too short for me when standing. No other reason.

I originally used a ball head but it was just a ball ache so now pop it straight on the pod :)

Always been straight on the pod for me.

Straight on the pod for me...680B with the 400L IS. I'm always paranoid I'm going to drop it or break it off somehow, so always hold by the lens tripod ring/handle.

Same.

I just rotate my monopod for left to right, 234rc head for up & down, and rotate the lens in the tripod collar to go between vertical and horizontal orientation.

All long lenses go straight on the monopod, i`m 6"2` as well, but I bought a monopod that was tall enough. An old Giottos one IIRC.

Manfrotto tilt head with release plate mainly so I'm not messing about screwing stuff to the camera or lens. All my tripod and mono pods heads have the RC2 plates on them.

Use a Redsnapper ball head on mine.

Found it too awkward to pan, especially on hilly circuits, when it was straight onto the monopod.

I had a tilt head but it was more trouble that it was worth, so binned it and now attach my 400 2.8 directly to the monopod with a Manfrotto quick release thingy.

If I google "Manfrotto quick release thingy", will I find it? :-)

It seem's like theres a mixture on here. No right or wrong way. I've never tried using any kinda head, but it just seem that with a 400mm it could be a bit awkward.

Anymore for anymore?

Straight on monopod for me too
