Having just brought an Olympus e520,and having just read the instruction booklet.I was wondering if any body could point me in the direction of a course on understandig your DSLR or something similar .I live near Sunderland, but would me prepared to travel say 50 miles any help would be appreciated thanks.

look at your local collages and or schools some run evening classes...keep an eye in the local paper.. check the local libary too

newcastle college offer a range of courses in photography including digital imaging.why not look at their website and see what they have to offer

Have a read of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson as well.

Start with the tutorial section on here, then look in the meeting section for local gatherings.

Just read books! Look at my flickr, I've never had any formal tuition what so ever. (I'm not saying i'm a great photographer, but I know how to use my DSLR)

My advice is get out there and start shooting, reading the manual normally helps too lol. When I bought my camera I didnt have a clue and started in auto, then slowly started learning and using different modes.

Google is your friend and also try a youtube search you never know you might find something useful.

It probably sounds cliche but just play with it. I got my 450D recently and just had a play around with it and read the instruction book for a few things I was stumped on. It's digital so you don't have to worry about loads of films worth of experiment shots.

I'm just getting started, I just got out there and took loads of photos. I was really lucky, my camera was delivered to work at 11am, at 12:30 we were sent home due to snow. I ended up with four days off during those two weeks. :)

The key thing is at this stage keep the photos that didn't come out how you expected as well as the good ones. If you're braver then me you can post them up here and ask how do I improve this.

Another tool is exif info, if you right click on any or your pictures and click properties and then go to the summary tab it'll tell you what settings the photo was taken with.

As you start to read up more on exposure it's fun (well it is for me, but I'm quite dull) to start making guesses about how pictures you see on here were exposed.

Thanks very much for all your replies, guess i will just get out and start using it.Will also follow some links and see where it takes me.Thanks again

Impossible to explain to a girlie.

ETA(The offside rule, not how to use a DSLR!)

My advice would be to get to a library and take out as many books as you can. Doesn't matter if they're aimed at film as well, all the principles are the same until it comes to developing and post production.

I would just get out there and play, best way to learn IMVHO.

Look on Flickr for ideas and then go and try them out by changing settings and you'll see what works.

Good luck!
