Hi all,

Well my Nikon D80 has now arrived along with Nikon 18-70mm and Nikon 70-300mm lenses. I know that I should buy some filters to protect the glass, I'm told that a Polaroid and a UV filter should be at the top of my list.

Could someone tell me how I tell what size I need. Looking on the net I see that there are 58mm, 67mm and 77mm versions. Am I right to assume that I simply measure the radius of the lens?

Thanks,

Comus

try looking on the inside of the lens cap, it should have it written there if its anything like canon/sigma, otherwise check your lens boxes/instructions, it'll say on there

So easy when you know how.

Thanks for that. 58mm for the small lens and 62mm on the 70-300.

So much to learn!!

Thanks all.

Actually all,

While I'm here, is a polariser and a UV the same thing?

Do any suppliers sell packs at a reasonable price. ie a polariser and some of the colour effect filters?

a uv filter and a polariser are totally different.

a UV filter pretty much just protects the lens from any damage IE scratches Comus (it does also stop or reduce UV light coming into the lens, which supposedly improves image quality a bit) a polariser can block polerised light, it is very diffferent to a UV filter but a lot of people swear by both of them. A poleriser will help you remove relfections and also help with fluffy clouds and stuff. I don't use either myself btw :p
