How do I resize my image?

I have about 20 images that are all random sizes along with a portait/landscape mix as far as orientation goes. These images are to go in a 12" square photo album and I wanted to make all the images this size. As most of the images are not square, this will leave space around the edges etc. I want to be able to take the JPEG files to my local camera shop so that when they print them off they are all 12" square prints with the actual image in the centre with a black surround. Can I do this in Photoshop? or am I best just resizing the images and mounting them on a black piece of card or something before I put them in the album. :thinking:
This is a favour for my girlfriends sister so no cost to me from the printers.;)
 
One way might be to open a new file (blank canvas) with the canvas sizes at 12'' x 12''. With your image opened resize it to the appropriate dimension of 12'' either portrait or landscape to suit the orientation of your image then using use the move tool holding down the shift key so that it is pasted centrally into the blank canvas.

If need be you can use the transform/scale to fit the image into the new canvas. Any space around the image can then be filled with whatever colour you need using the paint bucket. Hope this helps.

One thing to remember is that high street processing does not like printing cropped pictures but relies on cropping in their process so be aware of this.

Cheers Mick - I've made a new canvas 12" square and resized one of my images to a little under 12" on the width. I have then dragged the image onto the new canvas but it is huge and needs reducing in size somehow to make it fit on the new 12" square canvas. Is this done with the transform tool? Never used that before.
 
You could use Edit/Transform/Scale and resize the image to fit. have you resized the image to 12" on its largest dimension also make sure scale styles,constrain proportion and resample image are ticked when resizing the image prior to moving it to the blank canvas. Normally when you do this it scales down the other dimension as well.

Also, when resizing using the transform-scale tool, hold shift to keep aspect ratio
 
Brilliant advice guys. New canvas and fill background with black paint bucket tool, drag new image and transform with shift key held. Job's a good'n!! :thumbs::thumbs:
