first equipment

Nikon D800 with battery pack _ Nion AFS 80 -400 mm lens- Manfrotto 322 RC2 tripod head with quick release head

The problem is with the quick release plate lever is fouled but the battery pack. So the only way is either to mount camera and lens first then fit battery pack. Or loosen the lens collar and turn everything out of the way ,ie camera and lens with pack fitted, fit it to the quick release plate and turn it all back.
Ok I could use without battery pack fitted admittedly but wold prefer the addition of additional battery as I have it

kirk do a lens support as below

but this is for an Arca-Style base plate which may not fit manfrotto tripod head
I have tried a straight type plate but I feel not really up to supporting this equipment

So any ideas along the lines of the kirk. There is one with a strap across the lens to hold it steady but that is not the problem, It is the clearance between the quick release plate lever and the battery grip

On the 70-200 lens they used a slide off arrangement on the collar, pity not used on the 80 400 lens

So anyone with a solution will be gratefully received such as a spacer bar between release plate and lens collar foot

Can you not mount the base plate 180 degrees (or 90)around so that the lever is at the front (or side)?

If not, I remember that you could get a spacer plate for a Mamiya 645 to raise the camera a couple of centimetres.
It was 'U' shaped and, obviously, mounted sideways. There was one on ebay a few days ago. I would suspect that something similar is available.

Bazza, if you look at the bottom of the QR plate, you'll see that there are 2 arrows indicating which way the lens should point. The alternative direction will put the QR lever to the left of the lens foot. TBH, I can't see any reason why the lens can't face the other way should the QR lever foul the grip in the recommended orientations. FWIW, if you do go through 180° rather than 90°, I would also turn the plate on the head round so your left hand still "drives" the release of the ball head (or t'other way round - can't see for sure in your pic!)

Nod yes turning the plate the other way works but the pistol grip is then on the left and not the right hand side which I prefer. Still it saves buying something and no doubt I will get used to it being that way. OK hands up I admit I never gave it a thought. Thank you,

As Nod suggested now. Me brain dead so it seems

Bazza, the plate that the QR plate goes into on the head can be moved to suit. There are 3 pairs of countersunk holes on the platform (one pair will be full of countersunk machine screws with Allen heads) and on the opposite side of the round bit of the head, there's another pair of threaded holes. Finally, there's a pair of threaded holes on the end of the trigger handle furthest from the ball. One of the (?) 18 possible permutations should suit you! FWIW, mine's set up as below so I can drive the head with my left hand and deal with the dials and shutter release with my right. (Crap photo but available light and I'm knackered!)
