Hi

I was looking at the following photography site

deardenstudio.co.uk

Thought the wedding pics were amazing. How do they get the colours so good. I can't get mine to look anywhere near as nice as them. Does anyone know any good tips to use when processing raw file in CS2.

lizzy:thinking:

In the CS2 raw converter just take the exposure up to really release the highlights but whack up the shadow, contrast and saturation. Then play around with the curves just to even out the tonal range slightly. Then you can just output as TIFF, and then play around using curves layers, maybe hue/saturation layers and unsharp masks to give it some punch.

the wedding pics look like they have only had the contrast adjusted. I cant see anything else special TBH. can you be more specific as to a picture

Michael.

Hi lizzy, I shoot weddings too and shoot in RAW and I have to admit I don't actually touch the colours other than converting to B&W. I don't boost colours in camera or apply sharpening in camera either.

Good lighting is the key to good pics and weddings are no exception.

Have a look at Mark Cleghorn or Damien Lovegrove, Brett Harkness or Trevor Yerbury for some stuff that should knock your socks off!

ohh and just noticed welcome to the forum, Lizzy.

Michael

No there's no specific shot really just all the wedding ones really.

Its the colours really they just look great to me will try fiddling around with the settings in CS2 some more. Cheers

There's some lovely shots there, although a lot of it is the oft-overused blown out heighlights business which, whilst flattering, does make the eyes tired over time.

Cheers,
James

What are you shooting with Lizzy?

I'd much rather try to encourage you to get shots like that in camera rather than try to replicate them in PS. That's going to be a killer if you have to tweak every one!

All about the light and getting a great exposure to start with. Edits look nice and pretty minimal.

I'm shooting with canon 5d and 20d. Lenses. 24-70 canon f2.8. Canon 85mm 1.8. Canon 50mm 1.4. Canon 70-200 f4.

Pretty much snap then lizzy!

I use a 5D a fair bit with pretty much that line up so you are certainly not short of the kit to pull that off.

Have a look for a book on shooting weddings by Mark Cleghorn, it's a really good introduction to it. There is a fab section in there about how to find the right light. It's the curse of the wedding tog, not enough of it half the time and too much of it the other half!

The 5D is renown for getting those kind of colours too. Both Mark Cleghorn and Damien Lovegrove shoot with 5D's, have a little look at their stuff online, Damien's site (Lovegrove Consulting) has some good training clips too.

cant beat shooting through great glass and recording the light thats is there
thats looks like the answer to me

IMHO its all about the glass

It's all about the light AND the person behind the camera.

Put a 1D and great glass in the hands of a learner.... you'll be unlikely to get great images.

Glass helps record the light for sure but the two important things are the light and the person behind the camera

I can stand testiment to that! Been there, done that. :D

When I bought my 1Ds, it was like taking a huge step back. I had to go back to button pushing and chimping instead of looking at light. I did feel like giving up a few times but I'm a determined little sod so I kept at it and I'm just about at the stage where it's my weapon of choice.

It's not easy though.

Hopefully a 1d will be my next step.....

Be prepared to get worse, a lot worse, before you get better.

:agree:

alib when can i expect to get better;)

also agree good glass will help alot. knowledge is power. but light is king

md:thumbs:

Could have been worse, I'm utterly useless with a Nikon, they don't blooming well make sense to me, it's like being asked to do everything left handed, just not natural.

Work of the Devil. :D

What a great camera that must be then - take a good tog, add a Canon, make a bad tog

DD

how does that work? Must be the pressure of holding the best marque in the world :lol::lol::lol:

But remember its only a camera, it only snaps like her indoors :lol::lol:
