I'm trying to create an effect that has lots of individual images in a patchwork. Just like this...

I created this by making a blank new image in CS6 then drawing lots of guides and making sure they were all the same height and width. Then I copied, pasted, placed and resized the individual images. This was with 25 images, but I'm looking to do one with 36 images in it. That will be a lot of work. I could create an action but that would just give me all images stacked on top of each other and I would still have to move them all around into place.
The end result must be square - 6x6 images - with all individual images also square. Each image must touch it's neighbour with no gaps inbetween.
Is there any way do this other than the long laborious and time consuming way I've done this sample?
