Not really photography related, though I suppose it could be.
I want to create a graphic for a web site where it looks like there is a hole in the page revealing something underneath. In my case the something is just a coloured background with some text on it, though it could be used as a way of framing a photo. Not sure exactly what effect I want, whether it should look like a crack, or a tear, or faded away. Just whatever looks right to me.
My problem is I have no idea how to achieve thse, or more accurately the ideas I do have totally suck. Creating the underneath is very straight forward, so I then add a white layer on top, cut a hole in it to reveal the content, but it looks awful and no amount of layer effects or blurring (to smooth the edges of the hole) helps. They all look a mess.
And for every tutorial site that came up on my Google searches nothing seems to help.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Michael.
