Hey Guys,

I am well happy with the results of this....

I took this picture myself, I printed it on canvas myself, I made the frame myself, I wrapped the canvas myself, and finally I hung it on the wall.....myself :D

Feeling pretty happy with the results, like a big kid :D

Its 17 inches tall by 55 inches wide

I know the wrapping could be neater but its my first ever attempt at doing this :)

And no, my living room is not orange....... Its "African Adventure 4"

Cheers,
Steve.

Are you sure that's not orange....lol... anyway well done you...looks like you did a great job xx

Lovely job, how much money did you save by doing it yourself?

Well done its lovely what printer did you use.
You could make money doing this. Not cheap these. Great for portraits too.

Excluding the cost of the printer, I saved about £100 :D

Obviously though a professional wouldnt have those little white edges creeping into the picture.

One of the suppliers I use can quote for anything on their website - one this size would have cost £39.03 for the canvas print; but the P&P is quoted at £25 as it's courier not Royal Snail

Still, £65 ain't bad I guess, but it does beg the question of where it saved you £100?

Top class canvas? Hardwood frame?

My local store quoted £130 to print that.

I've just been nosing on google again as I only bought a printer and did it myself due to the prices people were charging and the amount of work I want done. I still cant find anyone who would do a print that size and deliver for £65

http://www.photocanvasprinting.com/prices?PHPSESSID=e0777f5c06497d833b830e7b443e6a6a (£112)

and so on.

wow, that looks great BOM....i can see it now,my gixxer on the living room wall....i doubt the missus would approve though

Easy dude, give her an option, its either a 2' tall print or you'll buy a second gixer, slice it down the middle and mount that on the wall, either way you win :D

i think i'd be pushing my luck,as i already have 2 pics of me on my blackbird doin' a trackday a few years back.i suppose her wanting a pic of the grandkids isn't asking tooooo much,is it.:D

Well that depends, are they doing a track day?

Printer is an Epson Stylus Pro 7000, its bigger than me!

It's not all about money, there is the self achievement factor Steve has gotten doing it himself

That and the fact that since it's a done deal, what is there to be gained by peeing on the parade here?

Nice work Steve....... but you know you're going to end up taking it apart to sort those white edges. ;)

Of course it's not all about money, and I was not wishing to relieve myself in any way either

But, if others are thinking buying a printer and doing it yourself is cheaper - then unless you're doing dozens of them - it's not

Had it been my handiwork skills, it may have been 17" at one end, but it could have been 10" at the other !!!

I looked at producing them myself but (aside from the aforementioned lack of any DIY ability), it didn't make economic sense. But that's often the case with anything that can be done at high volume on big machines, a one-off is worth it for pride not cost savings

BOM, as Pro's (or anyone who can pass for one! There's a thought for you all) often get a discount, I guess that's why you can't match that price; aside from it also being a special order so it doesn't appear on my suppliers internet listing either

Nice work. Keep it up and you might get offers from some of this lot!!!
I felt chuffed when I cut my first mount, never mind doing a canvas jobby!

Aint that the truth

Cheers for the kind words and the debate :)

I scoured loads of ads for cheap printing before deciding to go down the route of buying my own printer, I have quite a few of my own images I want to print and also a large family that I know will want canvases of all their kids so I knew it would make economic sense to me.

The downsides to the printer are:
1 - Its huge and takes up a third of my office
2 - I now have lots of family members asking for photos of their kids

Great to see a project come together. Would've have the guts to attempt something like this myself for fear of messing something up huge and losing money on it. Hell, I was peeved when my home-made lightbox didn't quite turn out right. But its nice to see somebody getting their hands dirty and its a rather nice picture.
