Hello everyone,

I have some used camera equipment to sell and was wondering what your experiences have been regarding the best way to sell used camera equipment. I have made some recent upgrades and need to get a good price with the older equipment (all digital), with as little hassle as possible. I also want to minimize any risks at being stiffed in the process by sending the equipment to someone with no intention of paying. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

I would try here or other UK forums.

You will need a posting history, so we can get a feel for who you are. It not realistic to expect to sign up (here or anywhere else) then just start selling stuff from Day 1.

Failing that Ebay, although it can be a minefield for both buyers and sellers.

I agree the forums seem to be a good bet. Try them before risking eBAy.

Personally, I would try here or other UK forums, even going so far as reducing your price if it doesn't sell straight away for a more hassle-free sale.

To me, £75 easily earnt is worth far more than £100 with a buyer on ebay asking questions all the time.

surely forums dont offer any kind of insurance, where ebay offers something like £500

Ebay does offer insurance but can be a b****r to claim it at least on the these forums you can kinda tell if people are trustworthy.

Scott.

I agree with the idea of selling and buying from here.
Because of the post count rules, it makes it safe enough from a buyers point of view and as for selling, don't send the goods till you have been paid.

I have been the buyer and seller here on TP and it's been hastle free both ways.

not really no, someone with 100 posts could have 100 posts of rubbish and spam. At least with ebay you have a feedback system that does seem to work.

Personally if I was buying anything expensive, i'd want to collect in person anyway.

You can always check the posts to see if someone is joining in or just upping their post rate so they can sell. I have bought equipment from TP members from a few pounds up to a few hundred and so far had had successful transactions everytime. It is proving quite an expensive forum with equipment and various trips :D

Me too, Have bought a 1D MkIIn and a 70-200 F2.8 IS and a few other not so cheap items via this forum oh and sold a few things too.

Like most things in life, a bit of common sence and you should be ok I think

Sold both my Sigma lens and my 30d body on here - took a few weeks to get to the 100 post mark, but still sold the kit here rouble free to local buyers for cash on collection. By contrast advert on dslruser forum got no interest despite posting the adverts weeks before.

At least here there is a big audience and people always looking to change their kit as needs change.

I have bought and sold on various forums and on ebay. This forum is excellent but I have not done enough posts to sell here yet (not that I have anything to sell). My ebay feedback is excellent and is around 150 or thereabouts. My experience of forums has, so far, been excellent as has ebay. However, I think that there is always a risk and the only true advice i can give is to be 'honest and true' and trust your instinct. If a deal (buying or selling) comes with warning tingles, then be extra careful. Ebay (and the obligatory Paypal) does have a feedback system etc. buy Paypal can be quite a minefield if it goes wrong.
The best thing by far, is to try whatever means to achieve a purchase or sale in person and pay/receive cash. If this is not possible then simply weigh up the risk.
Overall, I would say that ebay has given me higher sale prices (even after the costs have been taken into account) but does carry more risk. Looking at someone's posts on a forum will easily disclose if they are an enthusiast or a thieving opportunist.
Not sure if this helps but I hope that it has.

I seem to remember that one of the items you sold came in this direction :)

A set of extension tubes if memory serves me.

Might I add a pleasure to deal with ;)

Personal feedback gained here is as valuable as anything ebay offers. The members here get to know who is reliable, and who is not, and we all read the for sale columns.

Anybody attempting to pull a fast one here would be jumped on by a member before the bits and bytes got a chance to dry on the hard drive:lol:

Seriously, this is a good place to buy and sell. I've done a lot of both, and for the best part have sent the goods on a promise of payment, and I have never been let down.

i have sold around £4000 of kit on ebay - also brought around £3,000 on ebay, and brought around £1400 here.
around 200 transactions on ebay - two small problems only

1) sold an old fuji camera - the battery contact fell off in the post (thank you post man) refunded the buyer refitted and glued and resold for more then the original sale + postage

2) a buyers account address and posting address did not match - smelt a rat - refunded the £400 or so and re-listed and sold for more money(+£50)

some items sell really fast here others do not sell at all - in which case - ebay carefully.

i only sell to uk only and would recommend this approach - follow paypal rules to the letter and send everything only after full payment to a verified address - cash and collection is king...
