How best to reorganise previous imports to LR3?

My Lightroom is a bit of a mess, to say the least. I have imports from last year onwards which are all over the place naming wise and organisationally.

I now want to implement a sensible naming convention (and know what I want to do!) but how do I go about sorting out previous imports so they fit in with the new convention?

Am I best to just do this in windows explorer and rename the folders, etc, on my external drive? Will LR pick that up? Or is there a better way to do it?

You can rename Presets once in lightroom by right clicking on the preset name and renaming it.
You can also create folders once in Lightreoom to organise them better by right clicking on the Preset area and New Folder.

I've managed to figure out what I want to do. September and most of October 2010 now done. It's only taken me an hour so far! Think I could be busy for the rest of the day ... but it'll be worth it!!!
