Yes
A brief look around suggests that across the board, - Jessops are nigh on the cheapest DSLR retailer going at the moment, undercutting most online retailers let alone the bricks and mortar stores.

How?! The figures surely can't add up, hundreds of stores with massive overheads yet selling gear cheaper or as cheap as the obvious online retailers. The margins must be slim, can they really make enough by piling them high and selling them cheap?

I guess Jessops are just trying to secure some market share....2008 hasn't been great for them (or many people in retail I guess) but whilst there is still growth in the dSLR market, it's still worth their while to gain as much ground as possible.

Cheers,
James

Are they?? :( Just checked against Warehouse Express and on the D90 and 50D Jessops came up £20-£30 more expensive. And there are sites out there cheaper than WE.

Have they got any discount codes on offer at the moment?

Maybe not across the board then, but as far as I'm aware the D40 and D60 are massive sellers, and at £225 and £290 respectively for the kit lens versions they are the cheapest retailer by some margin.

I'm no expert but I imagine that end of the market is booming, maybe they are hoping those customers will come back for their accessories/lens etc?

Jessops were selling the silver Nikon D40 for £195 a couple of days ago, must have gone pretty quickly

Fair enough, I was going on your initial statement. ;)

Indeed there is a lot of competition in the entry level DSLR market at the moment. I should imagine if Jessops weren't competitive there, it would be the death of them. That said, Jessops have never been that expensive for DSLRs, it's the accessories and consumables that tend to be way overpriced.

What they may lose on bodies they make up for on memory, bags/backpacks, tripods etc

They are currently using dSLR's as loss leaders

yeah, they can afford to do this as they wanted £45 more than jacobs for a 55-250mm IS! And the lowepro bags are CONSIDERABLY more expensive at jessops!

prices seem to be dropping quite abit with them of late, lets hope it continues as the service i have had there of late has been good by anyones standard

So true, we buy our work camera's from there, i was picking one up the other day and could believe the prices of the accessories

On the news this morning they were saying that there are over 30 major stores groups in danger of going under before the end of January- one has to wonder abou the like of Jessops

I've just received their Christmas sale email and there are a couple of good offers on the site. All can be ordered online then collected at store.
