Hotel on site photographers?

What's your thoughts on these guys? Does anyone do these shots as a job or has anyone.
I'm just in majorca at the moment and last night seen someone on site taking photos with a 2 light setup. Both at 45 degree angles to the subject both with no softbox or anything. Both appeared to be manual flashes.both at the same height as the subject.

Is this generally the norm? Would these 2 flashes with no softbox not cause harsh bright light? I know that one each side will obviously fill shadows from the other ones.
Obviously shooting outdoors with a full softbox could be tricky to say the least.
 
Do you mean a photographer taking shots of guests and then fleecing them with sales of prints the following day?

Had it in Rhodes a few years back when a tog took pics of the wife and I and was then upset the following day that we only liked one of the 6. She wanted 5 euros a pic and we ended up paying 10 for all 6...
 
Yeah the very same ones!
The flashes were used as a main flash as this was a night time image shot only under theses lights and the pool behind lit giving no forward lighting.

The model? It was members of the family. Either stood up in front of the flash or sat on the floor (with the flash the same setup) obviously using the falloff on the floor shots for a softer image if this, was in fact his intentions)

I've have never actually thought of that kind of job been boring to be honest. Ive kinda guessed it's no different to any studio kind of shots, working with different people in the same location... With the obvious added bonus of the nice weather and picturesque locations and been able to shoot outdoors using the same kit..

In regards to been slagged off I wasn't aware it was a common thing these photographers getting slagged off. I've only seen a post asking how a photographers lighting setup would perform (as an inexperienced photographer would like to learn more about the art)
 
Don't possess enough knowledge on lighting etc to pass comment on that, but I remember in Tenerife a young lassie working out of one of the bars doing a similar gig. From memory I think it was 5 Euros for a print (keying prints at a couple of Euros each were the up-sell if I remember correctly) which she ran off their and then for you. Decent picture I thought (maybe it was the model? lol) and a great way to get a little experience and make a few quid to pay your way through the summer.

I have to say I was (and still am if I'm being honest) quite impressed / jealous in equal measure of what she was doing.
 
There's nothing necessarily wrong with "hard light." For certain styles/subjects it's even preferable. And if the lights are only being used as fill then there's not much benefit to diffusion.
