I wondered if the forecasted week long so called indian summer will hold back the Autumn colour change in any way ?
I've booked a short trip to the lake district on the 20th October hoping to capture some good changeable colour, any knowledge on the subject would be helpful thanks.

Well the trees outside my place (Manchester) are gold and brown now, so I'd say you'll see plenty of colour by 20th October in the Lakes.

Nice one James, i know that all it can take is one storm to take 70% the leaves to the floor - fingers crossed, thanks :)

well on the way up here in Ayrshire

Trees probably get into deep circadian rhythms about these kind of things, and a change in weather isn't likely to throw them off. Most of the trees around here are already getting pretty bare looking with red and gold leaves everywhere on the ground.

A quick google reveals that leaf shedding is pretty much pure circadian rhythm... I'd post the link but it's a PDF from a journal. I'm sure you can find it if you want to.

Of course, leaves being downed by a storm is an entirely different and unnatural (as far as the tree is concerned) event.

The autumn color change started very early this year (at least 4 weeks sooner than normal) so there should be no issue with the few days of good weather we are having at the moment.

I would suggest that the trees photosynethis process will be slowing down due to the recent warm weather. They are not daft and will eek out any last minute warm spells to get as much energy into their system before they shut down for winter.

The best bit for us photographers is that the strong sun will add more colour to the leaves.

If you get a nice day in the lakes you will still see plenty of colour on certain species of trees. Good luck.

:D 20th October...You are an optimist.

Looking forward to see your photos once you are back from photo shoot
