Hi folks,

Anyone planning on going to the balloon festival in August?

Also, has anyone shot at a hot air balloon event before? If so, do you have any advice on photographing them?

Cheers

One tip I can give you is to make sure your there for the night glow, it's a must at ballooning events.

Looks great! There's a 6am ascent scheduled as well as one at 6pm. Bit of an early start, but I think it'll be worth making the 6am one in order to increase the chances of getting the right weather conditions.

Hi DigitalRelish,
I am planning to visit LLangollen for the Hot Air Balloon Festival, wondering whether anyone's mentioned any tips about photographing the Festival.
I couldnt see anything on the website for a 6AM ascent, the mass ascension is in the evening according to the website.

Hi whiteflyer,
Would it be possible to shoot the night glow without a tripod?I dont have a tripod yet and dont think I'll be able to get one before this Friday.

Would appreciate any info about what aperture to use during at night/day and ?ISO if possible. The maximum aperture I can go to is 5.6 on my lenses,I've got a 28 to 60 and 70 to 300 nikkor lenses which I had used with a Nikon F55 previously.
Will have to make sure I keep my D70 at ISO200 to start off and not make the same mistake as this weekend.

Hmmm, I thought I saw a 6am mentioned, but can't find it now.

i'm gonna be attending.

I may see if i can steal my mates wide angle lens also.

I'll be there for the light up, and i may sleep in th car overnight to catch the lift off. Albeit i only live 1hr drive away.

Don't think you'll need to as there doesn't appear to be a 6am launch.

Thanks. Shame you missed out on the scorcher of a day it was yesterday. Did you get to see the bikes today? I've a feeling you might have an interest in them... ;)

For most of the day time bike shots, I used a Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L IS.

For the night time bike shots, I used a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. Lighting was a mix of ambient and a Canon 430EX flashgun.

:(

I didn't get to go yesterday.

Had forgotten that i'd committed to something, and got a phonecall on the friday evening to confirm my attendance on the saturday night...

I'd already planned with a few friends to go also last night, and i let them down, as i was the designated driver too....

Nice photos Digitalrelish,I was there on Saturday and took a few photos. The nightime images didnt turn out well for me,probably because I didnt have a tripod and poor technique as well,so most of my pictures at night are all blurred.Have a few from earlier in the day which aren't blurred, will upload it into flickr or maybe post a few in this thread later during the week.

Love the balloon colours but the night shots of the bikes are fantastic.

Id love to do stuff like that...very impressive.

Well again due to bad weather the 1:00pm bike show only lasted 5min! and they only did a few small jumps, The next show was at 4pm so we popped in Llangollen for a bit. Heading back to the show 3:40pm i heard bikes!
Got in and find they had put them on eairly with NO WARNING!! i was WELLLL **** OFF! :bang::bang:
i know they cant control the weather but if they are going change shows around they should make announcments!

anyways rant over, you have some great shots there

Thanks for the kind words. Apparently, there was a smaller balloon launch at 6am after all. If I'd known, I would have headed for the hills to catch them rising out of the mist. That's what I'm aiming for next year!

Being at the event was good for close proximity and detail shots, but once they got off the ground it was a bit restrictive.

Still, it was all good fun and experience.
