I'm an eternal cheapskate, so thought I'd have a go at making a camera bag. Pretty easy and effective as it turned out:

Cheap rucksack, £6.99 from the local hardware store. The important thing is that it's got a "lid" that opens right up, useful external pockets, and no internal ones.

I then cut a cheapo camping mat to fit the back, and a strip to line the sides. I made dividers out of garden kneelers, £1.49 each from Wilkinsons, cut to interlock.

Worked OK, but smaller items were falling between the dividers and the back, so I stuck the whole thing together with contact adhesive: very strong, and job done!

I also cut three pieces of white camping mat the same size and shape as the lid to go over the top of the gear. Helps hold everything in place, and acts as a great sit mat AND reflector!

Total cost, given that the mat was going to waste in the loft anyway, was £15.99.

It works great; after some pretty brisk walking and swinging it about, everything stayed in place nicely protected. It'll do for now anyway!

I like to see a bit of ingenuity!

I have several camera bags (don't we all?) but not one that does exactly what I want. Time to do a bit of improvising, I think...

Nice one.

Badass! Looks like the mat makes a great packing material, excellent job there :)

Giving me ideas now...

The Velcro separators that come with "official" camera bags get on my t1t5. You can never get them back in where you want them after you've taken them out, malevolently & randomly sticky b4st4rds that they are.

The cut up camping mat looks like a runner. Thanks for posting; I think you've just saved me from a breakdown.

Lol I have a similar photography bag from Jessops was only £10.99 reduced from £45 though But Good job I like to find cheaper ways to get more things for your hobby.

Nice, like it doesnt look like a camera bag which is good  nice one  Im all for William Heath Robinson inventions, mend and make do

I have a Passport Sling which I find to be an excellent bag in all respects...except that is for padding. I don't quite understand what Lowepro were thinking.

I too have a camping mat which is now a bit shorter having cut pieces off to superglue into the bag.:)

Incidentally, the camping mat is what I use to sit/lie on while shooting at sporting events and also to pad out my motorcycle topbox when travelling with my camera gear.
