My better half and son have been helping me this morning making a home made soft box out of a clothes rail, a white bed sheet clamped tight to the cloths rail, a dark blue bed sheet to cover the top, sides, and rear. It has my SB900 inside on a tripod, does it need a reflective surface inside to bounce the light forwards?

Julian, you'll probably need a tree of speedlights to light that up as the surface area is quite large.
A roll of tinfoil may help if you make it concave , to flash off, and spread the light

If you have another light at least then try to add it near the bottom pointing upwards to help balance the light emitted

I like the attempt but i dont think its going to work, or at least not without quite a bit of extra effort.

Do you have any access to large sheets of card? or any card boxes at all? lidl are quite good for this as they always have loads they are chucking out.

You need to create a big reflector for the inside, but it needs to also be angled to bounce the light out.

The best thing to do would be to create a giant angled box with card, line the inside with foil, and cover the front with the white cloth, you can then cut a hole to put the flashgun inside, and fire the flash towards the back, thus bouncing off the foil and lighting the box up.

If you dont have card then wood would be good enough, but you need to cover it in foil.

Has given up on it, its a bit ridiculous in size.

Not going to work without a lot more expense and effort.

Seems a lot of hassle to save the £40 a properly made one would cost.

Looks to me as if your SB900 is waaay too close to the sheet, try backing it up a couple of feet and set the beam to a fairly wide pattern, or if you've got white walls face the flash away from the sheet towards the wall and use it to bounce the light off through the sheet...
