Home made 4 poster bed!

A few months ago I made a headboard for my bedroom out of fence posts, pallets and roof joists (thread here) - and the plan was always to make a 4 poster bed for my daughter.

I started the plans but shelved it due to unexpected car bills etc and holidays but I had some time over the last week to make it.

I bought ........

4 3"x3" inch fence posts
2 3"x2" posts
2 6"x2" roof joists
some 2"x2" lengths and some rough cut fencing for the lats.

We planed, morticed and sanded the uprights, then notched the side rails and mitred the top rails at the corners.
Prised the lats off the pallets and put them through the thickness planer and sanded them all down.
made sure everything was smooth then put it all together.
Once it was up we drilled and dowelled all the joints to keep it together and sturdy, the only screws in the build are the ones holiding the side rails in place (screwed into the uprights)
When it was all built I gave it a run over with a hand sander then finished it with some wax

Pretty chuffed with it considering its not my job and I work in a call centre lol.

Looks great. I had to click on the link and go into your flickr to see them but that may be my internet as we've had issues with it.
 
Now if you told anyone that your daughter was sleeping on a couple of pallets! :eek:

I think you've done a great job there and it certainly looks fantastic in Grace's room ... bet she loves it :)

She's one very lucky little girl to have a thing of beauty like that

She does mate, can't keep her off it, or from hiding underneath it lol. Going to screw a piece of ply to the bottom of the lats so she can't cut herself and then maybe drill some holes and put some fairy lights in it for her so she has a den underneath too!

Cheers :-) Although I'm the lucky one to be able to have a daughter like her to spoil :-)

Cheers mark, the pallets were recycled but the rest came from a builders merchant, still though its a great feeling knowing there isn't another one :-D

This is only the 2nd thing I've made, but I enjoyed it so will be doing more, need to get some more space though as it was a faff building it outside and in the kitchen lol

It was just a kind if sketch it and hope for the best, make it up as we go along kinda project. It worked out nicely and I have the plans now for when I make the next one lol
 
Well ain't you the clever one Nick. Excellent work and Grace has a top daddy! Kudos.
 
It looks pretty amazing Nick, I bet your daughter loves it, I know mine would have at that age. Actually she's 20 now and probably still would, although don't tell her I said so :LOL:
 
It' shows you what a bit of time and skill can achieve, If I'd made that it'd still have EURO written on it somewhere.

I once bought a load of europallets home for a neighbour who wanted to build a fort for his son, when I came home I was horrified to see them just nailed together in the garden, splinters and all
