my renewal has come up and having read a few older posts on here, I don't think I am getting value for money, given the additional premium charged for a small amount of kit with specified value. Can any of you recommend a house insurance company that have dealt well with you when you have claimed please- not necessarily including photographic kit. Thanks.

Claimed twice from Aviva in last 18 mths- renewal after first claim went down. Just waiting for next renewal premium. Both claims settled within 7 days

Price comparison website, you get dozens of quotes, pick the best! (NOT the cheapest)
I saved almost £200 on motor, 170 on house and contents and got better cover on motor, exactly the same cover on house and contents.
Not had a claim on either yet, so cannot really comment, but reviews are fine for both.

I had a similar about 8 months ago with valuables and Churchill seemed the best.

We changed last year (Building and contents) mainly for the better cover, but it was hardly any more expensive than our previous insurer.
We went with Privilege. Their Platinum policy fully covers any single item up to £4000.

It's just a case of shopping around really for the cover you want/need. Postcodes also come into play, so not just as easy as asking folk in other areas who their insurers are.

Don't forget topcashback and quidco for additional savings.

We got our renewal through today - we're with M&S - their Premier policy is definitely not the cheapest, but it is very comprehensive. Not had to claim with them yet.

Thanks guys. Any more recommendations very welcome. Will check those out from today. Appreciate it. Have a good weekend.

If you have high value single items, diamond rings etc then JL seem very good as their single item limit is more than most, so you don't have to get separate cover elsewhere, brings down the overall cost. Beware though the high value item(s) have to be worn to be covered, or in a safe.

I plug into moneysupermarket each year and always seem to get a reduction of 30-50% on my renewal on buildings and contents. I've increased the out of home/ holiday non itemised stuff from £6k up to £10k (in anticipation of a bout of GAS) and still dropped £100 in premium- all other aspects of the cover being equal or better.

Best to be up front about all the questions on locks, windows, alarms, etc and be cautious when taking out the policy as the one time I claimed years ago, when thieves broke in through the patio doors was the loss adjustor checked the front door to ensure it had a 5 lever mortice lock as if it didn't our insurance was invalid. I don't think it matters which insurance company you're with- this type of approach will be their starting point to either throw out or reduce any claim.

Ended up with Hastings Premium this year but only because they came up on moneysupermarket

We do the rounds each year and find that if you ring the original company ad say you are moving they will match your new quote. Doesn't work the second year.

That's never worked for me, hence the shift in companies.

I rang my existing company LV= (been with them for 3 years) and they reduced the premium a bit but they were still more expensive than another company. They would not reduce further so I said I would not renew. On reviewing the other companies policy I realised that some cover was not standard and to add those bits would cost more and they would only be a few pounds cheaper. I rang LV= but they said that I could not renew but would have to apply as a new customer and they could not guarantee my renewal price, I finally paid £20 less than the reduced price they quoted when I originally rang!

Royal bank of Scotland for contents only ,home and away cover on photographic items included

I've had that with LV= also- always worth checking the deal as a new customer -but that gets covered with moneysupermarket.com approach. It's dreadful what loyalty costs in the finance and insurance market- there surely must be a space in the market for a company that doesn;t try to shaft existing customers in the search for new ones

NFU Mutual. Has very good cover and constant Which Insurer award winners.

Do you have to specify items on your policy? Thanks for taking the time.
nope ,individual items to a value of £1500 per item included nothing of mine exceeds that sum

and the NFU supports a badger cull ,thanks but no thanks

I use money supermarket every year and pick a brand I know so recently Churchill quotes have been in the top 3 and they were brilliant at settling my claim for a bike worth c.£900 in a matter of days (that was on the individual bike policy I took out alongside my home contents).

Don't forget Aviva don't appear on any comparison site so you have to get a quote directly from them (same with direct line).

True

However after being prompted by this thread to look at my premiums, for me at least, Aviva came out £20 cheaper than all others on the comparison sites, the excess was less as well

One thing I didn't like however was when I didn't complete my online quote within half an hour I had a phone call from Aviva trying to sell me a policy

NFU and John lewis consistently top the chart in which magazine if that's any help to you.

You can go onto Directline and the Nationwide websites and get an online quote without any commitment, and that should give you a ballpark figure to compare others against. Both were half what LV was quoting, but that was pretty much down to the difference in the excess if you have a claim. As I haven't claimed for several years, I went for the lower price/higher excess option.

The National Farmers Union may well do so. NFU Mutual Insurance does not necessarily share those views. Two different entities.

One thing I would advise is that on comparison websites a lot of policies are stripped to bare bones, to get to the top of the list and beware of hidden costs eg. Want legal, thats £25 please Sir... Want a guaranteed courtesy car, add £30 or so... oh you want to cancel that's £75 to do that (yes one does charge a £75 admin fee for mid term canx.

At the end of the day if you have a banger and want to be road legal, go cheap. If you want top end service etc, you pay for it... (to an extent)

Tesco were very good when I had a claim due to a significant fire, they were also the cheapest when it came to renew the following 2 years. I'm only changing this year as they can't get anywhere near the price of some of the competition.

:ty:Thanks again.... It is always good to know who steps up when the substance hits the fan. Any more, please?

Just thought I would update after researching various companies. I have decided to stick with my current insurance company and pay extra to nominate 6 over £1k items for use out of the home. I found specialist insurance much more expensive. other companies couldn't beat the terms. Thanks for suggestions. It helped me work out what to do.
