I almost put these in WAMT but I thought they deserved a thread of their own as they can affect everyone. The Warranty issue is so short I'll include it here.
I've now renewed the home insurance. It's due on the 11th... so.. Saturday. On the 26th October, 13 days ago, days ago I received an online video from the company. It told me the renewal was due soon and what was covered and that 'by now' I should have received the renewal notice but I hadn't. In 2017 the FCA laid down rules re renewals stating that an insurance company must inform a policyholder "in good time". I don't think that was good enough and a prescribed period should have been stated. So, what does 'in good time" mean ? From the FCA website. I found this online. Another similar website stated that the nearer to renewal the higher the premium..by as much as 17% if finding a new insurer. https://www.acresinsurance.co.uk/2020/11/10/delayed-renewals/
FCA. "In determining what is “in good time”, a firm should consider the importance of the information to the customer's decision-making process and the point at which the information may be most useful" I did another Google and it seems that "in good time" generally means 21-30 days. I've had renewals a week to ten days before the renewal date . Have you noticed that there is never a date on a renewal ? Four pages and they omit a date. Call me a cynic but... What do they do ?. Produce a renewal and leave it on the computer for a week before posting it ? I think the FCA should have stated that a renewal must be received by a policyholder at least 21 days prior to renewal. The problem is the wording. Ok, post can go missing but not each year. I've been with the company for 5 years and each year they've left me little time to look round for a better deal. Infact, whilst I was looking last year my renewal arrived..late and had increased by 23% to £288 ..I got a call from them, or rather whoever they sub-contract follow-up calls to.He asked me if anything had changed and I said yes, my wife and I are both a year older. He reduced it to £243.
Last week I got several online quotes before the renewal arrived..late..very late. What a range of premiums ! From £320 to £940 .I keep all these prices for checking the following year to see what the percentage rise has been overall. Five days ago I still hadn't received the renewal so I called them. I spoke to a young lady who told me that I should have received it by now. Then she said she'd looked at my file and I hadn't ticked any of the boxes for communication by post,Email or text. I told her that that was in response to the question re. marketing and also marketing material from a third party re what they think I might be interested in. How would they know that ? She said she'd re-send the renewal.. I asked her how she could do that as it hadn't been sent in the first place. I also pointed out that I'd had a renewal for the past 4 years. I asked her what date was it supposedly sent. October 7th,she said. So she had a date on her screen that wasn't on the renewal. She then told me the renewal was £338 and did I want to go ahead. "No I'll look round " I told her. She then suggested I pay it and if I find anything cheaper cancel within the 14 day no-fee cancellation period. The policy states that the cancellation fee is £26.24 and no mention of the 14 day statutory no-fee period. I declined her suggestion..The renewal arrived last Saturday. It had gone up 37%. I know Home insurance has increased re a rise in the cost of materials and also claims re these storms we get but I Googled and found that 4-bed houses (ours) have gone up more than others and the average rise was 23%. The premium was now £340.. a 37% increase. I called the renewal line and the first thing the young lady said when I pointed this out was "that's high" She offered me £300 which I took as all my quotes were higher. She said re the delay that a lot of people (policyholders) had complained about late renewals. I was given exactly that resply at last year's renewal. Why should it be such a battle each year ? What annoys me is that those who don't have the time or worse aren't up to the battle will just pay an extortionate increase. So over the last two years premiums I've saved about £80 and I've battled each year for 5 years, so more than that. The renewal arrived on Monday and yesterday a letter stating that they'd sent me a renewal and I hadn't responded and when it expires I won't be insured !
Re the car service. We took out a two year extended warranty when the manufacturers warranty expired. It was a good deal..two free services, two MOT's and AA Recovery £420 each year. I did metion it on here and a couple did agree it was a good deal. You just have to be on the ball. They sent my wife a text. The brake oil needs renewing ..£75 and the tyre repair canister has expired..ie the date. £65 She asked me if she should reply and tell them to go ahead. I said no, I'll check the garage I went to when I had the Prius. I did... £48 for the brake fluid change. Halfords do a sealant canister for £20. We have a Halfords digital (better than the old anolougue reading) tyre pump that plugs into the socket between the front seats..they old cigarette lighter input so if we get a puncture I can reflate the tyre and get to a garage. There' are no spare tyres in cars these days. I knew this would happen and I told my wife to leave it. Once again you have to be' on the ball'. We had an 'advisory only' from them re a tyre last year..to replace that I was quoted £85. I got it done before the MOT there with my regular garage ..£63. A good quality tyre. I've been to that tyre/exhaust place for years and on a couple of occasions been told a tyre doesn't need replacing and to come back in 6 months. That kind of honesty pays in customers being with them for a life time.
I might be scuppered for the MOT next year..10 months to go..because we'll just have to pay whatever it is. I'll check as much as I can. I can't really take the car from them and then take it back. As I mentioned we get two MOT's. with the warranty.
