I have an old Sony STRDN1040 from like 5 years ago, it's 7.2 channel and does great for the money (£400 or something) but with the upcoming PS5/XB1SX on the horizon, and the Amp in capable of passing 4k (it downscale 4k to 1080p signal), i am looking to replace it. I already have a 4k OLED TV so I just need a new receiver.

(Side note - There is also this intermitten fault in the amp that it often self switches between inputs randomly!)

I don't need the latest and greatest but something that has ARC and HDCP 2.2 are a must, also HDMI 2.1 is possible for future proofing, what are the suggestions? Up to £700 or so. I am happy to get outgoing model if it has those features.

p.s. It will be used mostly for movies, gaming 2nd and music last.

I have the same sony amp, love it....for 4k and take a look at the Denon AVR-X2600H, my nephew recently got one, and is very pleased with it.

A visit to Richer sounds would be a good start. There are some excellent recievers within your budget and if I were in your situation I would possibly look at discounted outgoing models rather than the latest and greatest

Just bought a Yamaha Htr 2071 when my Sony receiver died.

Very pleased with it so far.

Sorry to seem to hijack this, but can someone please explain to me what one of these AV Receivers does? Is it a way of interfacing your UHD tv to a hifi system for sound quality, or more than that? Please excuse ignorance.

simply put its HIFI for your TV allows you to take signals from TV or Blu Ray etc and utilise the full range of the signal into 5.1 Dolby Digital / DTS / ATMOS so you can pump up serious speakers and sound and emulate a cinema sound more accrately.

It's basically the core of a home cinema.

Traditional HiFi Stereo amplifier drives 2 speakers, a Receiver is basically an amp, but rather than 2 speakers, it is typically at least 5 Plus a sub-woofer.

These days they can do a lot more, they can drive 7.2 (7 speakers and 2 sub-woofer) are not uncommon, also they become the hub of every home entertainment that goes through. Basically I don't connect my Sky TV box to my TV but rather connect it to the Receiver and then the receiver to the TV. I also connect my Playstation, Xbox, Bluray/DVD, Nintendo, CD player and everything else that normally goes to the TV to the receiver first. These days with ARC (it's an acronym), I use 1 remote and everything talks to each other, so my TV remote can control the receiver and back and forth.

In short, it is an amp for a home cinema, and basically a high tech HiFi Amp.

Long story is that it becomes the centre of any home entertainment for movies, games and music.

@Raymond Lin Thanks Raymond, that's a very clear explanation. I think I'll be looking at getting one then to set up my entertainment kit in my next house after we move next year. I like the idea of this.

You will love it. I bought a Sony HTK250 more than a decade ago. I first used it with a Panasonic CRT. then moved to an LG plasma in 2012 in time for the Olympics. The sound quality over the TV is astonishing and when you play a DVD, the full surround kicks in with the subwoofer. The first film we watched was Jurassic Park and it was as though we had a TRex in the living room.

I have a Samsung 55in OLED tv so I figure it will be good to make more of it (the sounder I have is really good but I like the idea of pushing the Sky, BluRay and streaming from an iPad through a box to it).
