Hi guys,

I'm off to Cuba in a feww weeks and I'm going to be taking my 500D. I have the 18-55mm IS lens as well as a carry case.

What would you suggest I take? A hood? A polarised lens cap (does that exist?)?

I'd love another lens but would like to concentrate on anything I'll need to shoot good photos in the sun.

Thanks,

Nick.

plenty of sd cards
extra battery
uv filter

Graduated filter for balancing the exposure of bright skies with the darker land.

Is that just a filter with part of the lens darkened? I'm assuming that you line up the gradient with the horizon?

Thanks

Edit - What mm filters do I need?

It should say the size of the filter thread you need on the end of your lens.....I think the Canon kit lens is 58mm

Circular polarising filter, for those blue skies and bluer seas.

uv filter

A UV filter will not improve your photo's in any way shape or form!

Personally I'd take a lens, hood circular polariser and if you can a couple of ND grads. Spare batteries are nice to have an available from ebay on the cheap and I'd also pick up a gorilla pod and a cable release, I've lost count of the times the last two have come in handy!

Circular polariser
Skylight filter to protect the front element when the CP isn't fitted

A good circular polariser is a great addition when sunny weather is guaranteed. Makes blues bluer, greens greener and cuts out reflections from water and shiny surfaces.

A medium telephoto zoom, eg Canon 55-250IS would be a good addition to your kit.

Lens hoods should be used at all times.

I'm not one for buying into the UV filter as protection.

never said it would improve his pictures but if he is going to cuba then he will be hitting a beach
if the guy does not get a cp or any nd grads then at least he will have a bit of protection for his lens

Yeah that's the one. You get hard and soft graduations that refer to how sudden the transition is from clear to darkened. I recommend soft for a more subtle effect. Most people go for square graduated filters as opposed to screw in ones as they allow you to position the graduation in the right place depending on composition rather than just cutting the frame in half as a screw in one does.

I took my Hoya Pro 1 CP to Cuba (Cayo Coco / Havana) back in April - really brings out the brilliant blue skies. I'm not bold enough to post photos for critique though. Enjoy - it's a fantastic place with open, friendly people.

:nono: Very naughty ....

... but pretty funny :D!

What about a really small tripod, in case you need to make any longer exposures at night ? A small Gorillapod will fit into most bags - even the little ones made for compacts might work at a push. Just a thought!
