hi flying to mexico on holiday just wondered if anyone can give advice have just read that all large cameras should be left out of hand luggage to be checked does this include lens as imam taking 4 didn't want to have them all out if not needed thanks
 
Keep anything you don't want smashed in your hand luggage. Never put your camera in the hold (unless its in a peli case).

E: should read properly.

It'll go though the scanner and they may ask to see it but not.always.

I put my camera in hand luggage, as I wanted it to get there in one piece :)
 
just don't buy any duty free fags on the inbound plane ,my daughter bought some at manchester and more on the plane and got stung by mexican customs for £300 import duty ,that will teach her
 
Flew to USA earlier this year and then Cyprus (either side of russian plane shot down) and did not need to take anything out of hand luggage camera wise. Although to USA they stopped me as I had a bottle of water in side pocket and to Cyprus had left a small swiss army knife in there - doh!
 
I think my main worry about putting a camera in checked luggage would be loss or theft and at least with cabin luggage it stays with you the whole time. If I had to stash my cabin bag out of site (eg I'm at front of plane and no spare overhead lockers nearby) then I would remove the camera bag from my cabin bag and stash it down by my feet.
 
I always have my cameras in a sports bag and I put it under the seat in front. Seen too many twits forcing bags and cases into the overhead lockers with no thought for other luggage already in there to risk putting my cameras in there.
 
Don't put anything in checked baggage unless you're prepared to risk theft, damage or loss. I know that's not always practical or realistic, but it's a good rule of thumb and I follow it as far as possible.
 
My kit bag always comes with me as hand baggage and goes in the overhead locker or under the seat in front. It's well packed in a well fitting bag so unlikely to be damaged by other bags - besides, it damn near fills the locker so there's no space for anything else in front of it! Going through the machines, I've had to open the bags fairly often and had everything in there swabbed a couple of times. I don't have any problem with that - I'd far rather spend extra time being checked thoroughly than end up spread across the countryside. Sure as hell beats driving down to Crete too.
 
I spent a happy 30 minutes detained by Peruvian customs officers because I had too many cameras. Then a further less happy 3 hours. There was just me and a bloke smuggling helicopter parts in a customs shed at 2 am. No, I don't speak a lot of Spanish.

Eventually I paid them a lot of money on the understanding that I could get it back when I took the cameras out of the country. Almost unbelievably I did get the money back but it took like 5 hours. Also, they insisted on paying me in cash in US dollars which was kind of odd.

The internet says Mexico allows 1 camera plus one video camera. I wouldn't try to argue with customs officers. Not again.

I had no idea some countries limited the number of cameras you took.
