Having previously investigated and tried the compact P&S camera route for my forthcoming holiday many were without a VF and I found with my shaky hands that it wasn't such a good idea given that some are small.

I have decided to opt back to the one dslr/ and one lens. I have both a 5D3 and a 550D. I have both the 16-35mm L F4, 24-70mm L F4 and a 50mm F1.8. I also have a EF-S 18-135 for the 550D.

This will be my first visit to Asia on a cruise ship and there will be quite a few excursions ashore and I also have several full days and evenings before and after in Singapore (hopefully the haze will have gone!) whilst the cruise will take in Bali, Komodo, Penang and Phang Nya in Thailand which I hope will be good for walkaround / street, landscape and night shots. Certainly I hope the latter two.

My questions are the 5D3 with the 24-70, sell some other kit and buy a 24-105 F4 for it or go with a cropped 550D / EF-S 18-135mm combination. Also considering a Joby Gorillapod SLR Focus and Ballhead X tripod. Open to any suggestions please.

Thanks for any advice!

I'm not a canon shooter, but have a 24 - 120mm lens which I find a great range for most things. It's only F/4, but with VR/stabilisation don't find I miss any faster tbh.

btw, I really like the Fuji X20 for my hols.

For travel I generally take a superzoom for general shooting and a fast prime for night time walkarounds.

Which camera you take should depend on how strong and fit you feel - no point in having a camera if you're not going to have it to hand all the time.

I normal travel with a 5dmk3, 24-105mm and a 50mm Zeiss F1.4. I would probably just take the 24-70 and pop the 50mm in your pocket for low light, oh and the 5dmk3. I find I use that range most anyway for general travel pics.

On FF my walkabout lens is a 24-120 and on crop, it's an 18-135. Often go out with a compact which has an equivalent FoV to a 20-100 (or so) on FF.

Thanks all for the advice. Decision made, 5D3 and 24-70 F4, with the 50mm F1.8 tucked in.
