Hello all

I am having a weeks holiday in the lake district and wondered if anyone had any recommendations of places they would say are a must to visit?

Any suggestions are most welcome, even for recommended places to visit such as visitor centres, wildlife centres, great walks great places to go visit, good days out.

Thanks :)

Muncaster Castle is a good one, its got a castle (obviously!!), some beautiful gardens with 200yr old rhodedendrons (sp?), great views and an owl sanctuary on site.

I would imagine a trip to Wastwater to capture the obligatory shots is in order and if you like churches then St Olaf's at the head of the lake is worth a look, very old, very quaint and very small!

Keswick is lovely too, very villagey, some nice pubs and shops to have a walk round along with a great boat trip on Derwentwater (I think it is ) and if you get there early enough so chances at wooden pier shots

There's loads to do, all depends on which part of the lakes you're going to but the scenery everywhere is simply stunning :)

Another vote for Keswick. We had a weekend there and it is very nice. Some of the pubs are great, especially the Dog n Gun. More real ale and real food than you can shake a stick at!
It is very much an outdoorsy area, very popular with hillwalkers. We had a nice relaxing day out getting the steamtrain from Haverthwaite to Lakeside, then the boat up to Bowness. Lovely way to relax.
Oh and don't forget to visit the Cars of the Stars and the Bond Museums.

theres Castle Rigg stone circle as well near Kendal, Derwent water, Ullswater and Honister pass

To be honest everywhere is amazing...

Except Bowness which is horrible!

I love Keswick, another vote for the Dog & Gun definitely, whole town is great - Chippy in the middle opposite the Moot Hall has the best chips I've had in years.
Castlerigg is good, Tewet Tarn is better ('cos it's always got less 'togs there!)
Derwent Water is always gorgeous
Flock In Tearoom at Rosthwaite is heavenly
Drive over Honister Pass, along Buttermere then Crummock Water is fantastic...

I just love the Lakes, never had anything but an amazing time there...

Another vote for Buttermere, if you're lucky you might catch a stunning reflection.
If you like hiking one of my very favourite walks is along the ridge from Scale Force (highest waterfall in the Lake District) along the ridge to Haystacks, terrific views !!

The Langdales are also pretty special, for hiking & photography

Grasmere is lovely and you have to get some Sarah Nelson's gingerbread from the little shop. It is fantastic. William Wordsworth is also buried in the church next door.

Lovely village which is worth visiting before or after Keswick as it's just down the road.

Keswick, Langdale.
Cannot go wrong in The Lakes. It's all a super area.

Hi Emma,

I'll add a couple too....

You could visit Dodd wood on the A591 East of Bassenthwaite Lake. There you can climb Skiddaw if you're feeling particularly energetic and get the weather. On a clear day the views over the lakes are simply stunning. The Osprey visitor centre is also located here at Dodd Wood.

Crummock Water on the B5289 on the way to Buttermere is also breathtaking on a clear day. You have Grassmoor alongside Crummock again if you feel energetic and fancy some elevated views.

On the West coast you have Mawbray Bank Nature Reserve on the B5300 coast road North out of Maryport

This is a nice little B&B I've used when I did some work in that area - http://www.graysonside.co.uk/ - Very clean and comfortable (have wireless too)

Enjoy, Guy

Thank you ever so much for all your suggestions i will be having a good look through all of them and then will be planning my trip away :)
