Yes
Going to Skiathos on Saturday, and not decided on what gear to take. Depending on destination, I will take my main camera (z8), wondering whether to go light and just take my Sony RX100 and DJI pocket 2.
I am guessing I’m probably going to regret not taking the z8 but it’s a big camera and it will be quite hot there. (Hopefully).
Not seen a great deal of images on flikr etc, so don’t know how photogenic the island is, if I’m just going to get holiday snaps may as well go light.
Anyone been?

Hello from Skiathos :) check out images of Skiathos airport landings there are one of the main photo and video opportunities. The island is beautiful. The Milky Way will be visible when you arrive. Bring whatever you like there are lots of possibilities in the town and port, the beaches and inland for example the monastry. It’s very bright so think about polarizing filter, and a Nd8 if you want fill flash.

What’s the purpose of the holiday? Will you have trips planned? Or are you just laying by the pool.

When I travel I photograph’a bit’, nothing that’s worth taking decent gear, but I do anyway

For most things (other than some wildlife), an RX-100 (one of the later ones with their longer reach zoom) should be enough, although for a once-in-a-lifetime trip, a fuller kit bag is a better idea! Since I wanted the longer options the RX-10 gives me, I bought one as a single camera holiday option (for Crete, which we visit every year.) Since it offer the same FoV as a 600mm lens on FF/35mm film, it equals the reach of my longest lens on my Fuji outfit, although it doesn't go quite as wide as my 10-24 can on the Fuji.

Well , I’m so glad I left the z8 and the z24/70 2.8 at home. Literally got blown off my feet and into the sea by an aircraft taking off at the airport. Stupid I know , landed onto some rocks,Sony dcrx100 and pocket 2 knackered and smashed elbow.
At least the Sony and DJI loss is only 1k not the 5.5k it would have been had I have taken the Nikon.
Word of warning for anyone else, do not do this.

Hope that's not a literally smashed elbow, and that you recover quickly.

Oh dear.........:(

Yeah knackered my elbow in unfortunately, ( I will live) I can just about take the loss on the gear , but would have been devastated if my z8 got smashed!
I very sorry to hear that I hope you recover soon.

For others reading the danger comes with the take-offs. There are big “danger of death” warning signs but there is always a crowd of people there standing right behind the jets. The ambulance and police are frequently there to help when there are accidents. I regret not making this clear in my initial reply.

Re the airport photos .My wife told me that she'd told a friend who was going there to go to the airport to see the planes coming ...50ft above you. I asked her to Email her friend again and tell her not to go to the airport itself but the town end of the runway and to be careful.

So..if you go into town on a bus, as we did ..get off at the terminal. Walk down to the sea and go left along the road alongside it .It's a 10 minute walk to the T junction at the end where the fence for the runway is. The planes taking off taxi there from the 'stands' at the terminal and turn round for take off. As mentioned by Tim, be aware of the blast from the engines as they wind up for take-off. . You must make sure you either stand well back ..a good 50m or bettter still, to the side. Don't stand behind the planes at the T juntion. I saw a quad bike being blown into the water such is the power of the thrust. of the engines. There's a notice on the fence 'danger' but some take no notice of it and at best, lose hats but I saw an elderly gent being blown onto the road and he was about 25m away. The LA won't stop people going to see the planes as they are about to take off because it's, basically, a tourist attraction. Here I used my 24-105 f4 on a 1D1V

The narrow streets of the town make for lovely photos.

Re the planes. For a different shot you can look down on them as they are about to land. At the T junction, where people stand, many in the café car park but the blast hits there too so, even there, stay away from the entrance ... turn right, walk 50m, past the left turn ..that road runs alongside the airfield.,carry on to the road on your right which is very steep. Walk up it until you are nearing the sharp left-hand bend and look for a spot in the fencing so you can stick your lens through. Watch out to sea for incoming aircraft as they emerge into view from the hill you're on. You have to be looking through your lens ready or you coukd miss the shot(s). If you want to see the planes lifting off, then take that road that runs alongside the airfield, right to the end and turn left and walk to the hill and up onto it to look down on the planes. It's all a great experience.

Taken half-way up the hill as described. I used a 70-200mm lens on a 1D1V..10fps. f7.1 1/1000 sec

Taken by the café a 100m from the T junction. Even here you can still feel the blast from take-off but much weakened.
