Hi Guys,

found quite a few threads on this, but has anyone found insurance cover for their kit whilst on holiday only, i.e one or two weeks and not for the whole year which seems to be the norm?

Get-out clauses are a nightmare, i.e how are you supposed to know if the hotel you are staying in has an armed guard and 5 lever locks fitted to the bedroom doors

Will check with Household Insurance when they open on Monday, but just wondering if anyone has looked into this recently.

I think you may have trouble convincing a holiday or household insurance company that a 1D MK4 is anything short of a professional camera, so would be unlikely to be covered - suggest a proper camera insurance policy, or leaving the kit at home.

Try phoning the companies that offer yearly cover and ask if they do shorter terms?

When you get off the phone to the insurers, phone the hotel and ask? IIRC, some travel agents also have a book of extra facts about hotels - they may be able to answer questions like this.

I added my gear £5k to my home content insurance policy - all risks home + abroad - +£40 - try that?

Mel, any restrictions, excesses etc?

Don't use your travel insurance for your kit, the amounts you can claim for totals and single items are tiny, we just went to the states and I took a 1Dmk4 and we used Elephant I think for our travel insurance and took their gadget cover as most even now have limits on electrical items like phones, music players, games, cameras etc getting a pay out would be difficult if somthing disapeared.

I do have camera insurance so that was covered by that (i hope) but even then I took it everywhere, we also took the hand luggage bags out with us every day and left them locked in the boot of the car as we wern't staying in touristy locations so the hotel rooms were without a safe.

This often the case and for more expensive items if they are also covered under your house insurance its often better to claim under that. If its dual insured they will share the cost anyway (ie I think if you claim under travel insurance, they pay you then contact your house insurance to recover a share of that payout from them and vice versa - they definitely used to do that).
