I am new to Digital SLR (well any SLR) photography and was just surfing the net when I found this site.

You all seem really friendly and informative, so thought I'd register and just say Hi to you all.

I've been using a compact digital camera for a few years and I've just treated myself to a Nikon D90 with the 18-105 lens kit

I'm really looking forward to going through the tutorials on here to get me started. Does anyone know of any good books or dvds that would help a newbie to DSLR, or do you think it's best to just start taking shots and experimenting?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Alison :)

Hi there Alison! Welcome to the site.

It's probably a good idea to do a little reading beforehand, just so you know the basics - you don't want to just jump straight in and get frustrated when things don't go according to plan. But in the same respect, don't get too tied down into the literature - photography is all about creativity.

Last but by no means least, have fun with it! And post some images up here when you feel comfortable showing your work. We'll all be happy to give some constructive criticism and feedback.

Once again, welcome! :)

Thanks for all the lovely, warm welcomes folks.

And, yes Cold Rival I will definately put some of my photos (or maybe just one at first ) on here when I've had a bit of a play with my new "proper" camera.

Ali :)

Hi gemini,

Welcome to TP.

Where abouts in East Anglia are you?

Understanding Exposure is a great book for starters and getting a good understanding of what and how to make a good photo excellent ( or at least thats what I am hoping for as halfway through it:thinking:)

Hi Tractor Boy

I'm in Cambridge, whereabouts in Suffolk are you?

:thankyou: Thanks for the book recommendation - I just had a look on Amazon - is it the one by Bryan Peterson? I'll have to take a look at that.

Ali :)
