High sync speed in strobist mode - is it possible?

Hi,

I am looking for a solution to use high sync speed flash off the camera. I use Canon system.

The applications could include use of long lens (1/250s is hardly enough for 300mm), outdoors in the midday as fill (alternatively use reflector), indoor sports (1/800s desirable).

ebay triggers or PW won't do it with any flash. 430EX and 580EX can do it on-camera, but I need it off.

I think the canon ste-2 can do it. I have been looking at this recently for myself.

don't forget the shutter speed is almost unimportant with flash
you open the shutter - the flash fires at 1/2000 - the shutter closes
That is plenty fast enough to freeze most of us!

For indoors, that is the case. But what about when the ambient light is too strong for 1/250s? Do I need to stop down to f/32 or use ND?
 
Dont know about Cannon, but with Nikon I can high speed sync off camera with PW's, but I need a dedicated Nikon flash (SB800) on my camera to fire any flash off camera, there are limitations mainly that you need the off camera flash at full power and you are still only going to get f2.8 to f4 ish. Will try and post some pics.

The new PW will let you HSS but then for the price they most probably will brew up for you too.

Thank you for the video. I think they used it with plain EOS wireless flash system, and just briefly mentioned PWII at the beginning. I was fairly impressed with it, and well, will be getting a couple of 580EX/550Ex, whichever comes at the right price. PW2 are nice, but not yet for my pocket.

you can also drop the ISO to have the same effect!

PT-04s will work down to 1/1000, maybe more I think. I use them and normally shoot biking photos at around 1/800.
 
GeForce Junky is right, the PT-04's will sync at 1/1000 and the PW will sync at 1/8000 and thats older PW's 11 not the new ones.

Whats the focal length got to do with it? The flash duration will be much less than 1/250 - which will essentially freeze your subject the only reason for wanting a faster flash synch, is to negate the effect of ambinet lighting, which seems odd. I can out flash the sun at 1/500. How bright is this indoor lighting.. i.e what settings would be typical with no flash? f8@ 1/60?

Depends on your camera. If it has electronic shutter like G9 then it will. Unfortunately for EOS it wont.
