High Speed trigger and 580 EX. How do I connect the two?

I've got an high speed trigger (an old but fully functional Matzo) for taking some bursting balloon and similar type shots. The output on the trigger is a PC terminal, almost identical to the one on my 580EXII.The handbook doesn't seem to mention what the terminal on the flash is for, so am I right in thinking that a cable with identical ends could be used to connect the two, and that the trigger pulse from the unit will activate my flash unit?

If this isn't correct, then has anyone any idea how to activate the flash? Would I need something like the YongNou receivers which have a jack socket built in. Could this be connected to the trigger?

External sync socket on the 580EXii is a standard PC terminal, probably female (not sure).

Any trigger plugged in there will almost certainly fire it. It just has to short the contacts.
