I have just bought an SB-900 and have started to play with it (as you do) but have got kinda stuck on the flash sync speed. I have set my D300 e1 setting (Flash sync speed) to 1/250s auto FP but all my shots so far in Aperture priority the shutter speed remains doggedly at 1/60s. To get a really fast shutter speed in iTTL mode do I have to use shutter priority or am I missing something? Also, is there any real benefit to setting 1/320s auto FP?

I have just found my answer trawling the web, Happy Christmas to one and all.

I'm no Nikon man, but, in AP - you camera is exposing for the BG, and then the flash is lighting your subject, so your likely to get a slow shutter speed if your bg is not rather bright. If your after a faster shutter speed, you could use shutter priority, but turn on high speed sync incase your shutter speed nudges over your max sync speed.

Easiest thing to do would be to stick the camera in manual, set your shutter speed and aperture etc best you can for your scene, then let the flash automatically sort itself out lighting your subject using iTTL - you can always make some finer adjustments tweaking to EV on your flash + or -

Hope that makes a little bit of sense :)
