A colleauge of mine is going on holiday soon and wants to buy a new camera. He wanted to go for the Sony NEX 3 or 5 but by the time it is out, he will be on holiday.

In terms of requirements, great IQ, small size and video.

So what do you think:

Panasonic G2
Lumix GF1
Powershot G11 (doesn't shoot HD)

I wouldn't have really classed the G2 as a 'compact'.

There's the Panasonic LX-3 to consider too, which is more compact than any of them and does 720p video.

Another vote for the LX-3 in the compacts, I have the Leica version (D-Lux 4) of the same camera and it's great.

Your friend may find the zoom inadequate though. I usually have a second camera with zoooom on me but the Leica rules the indoors especially :p

How about the Canon S90 - I haven't got one, but it is rated very highly.

Regarding the GF1 - How compact is that with the kit lens on it?

I have a GF1 with the 20mm pancake lens.....I think its a fantastic camera, but its just a little bit big to be truly 'pocketable'....dont let that stop you getting one though !

I have a G11 and it's a cracking camera. But like all in in your list it's not exactly what I would describe as "compact".

S90 and G11 are great choices if 640x480 @ 30fps is adequate for video. Really looking forward to the G12 if the rumors hold true..

I have the Canon s90 and it's a little stunner! Very happy with it. Check out my Flickr. There is a set just for the s90 pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andywest1/sets/72157623510319967/

I have the LX3 which is fantastic - however I think the S90 is smaller (and poss more zoom?).

For a compact the LX3 is superb, and has great video as well.

If they don't care about Raw or manual control then I'd save some money and go for something like a Panny TZ7 (or whatever number they are now up to!). Not quite as good indoors, but good zoom and pretty versatile, especially in good light.
