Yes
My dad used to visit a spot for bird photography a couple of years ago that he told me was near Asda's in Coryton, Cardiff. Does anyone know much about it, or where it is? He passed away earlier this year, and I wouldn't mind trying to find it, and use his 100-400mm lens for a few shots of our flying friends before potentially selling it.

I hate a mystery... .

Here it is

The map shows the nearby Asda ;)

HTH and you enjoy the visit..... please don't forget to post some images :)

That looks like the one :) Have you ever been there? Are the hides public or private?

Sorry no never been there........apart from a trip a few years back to Tenby, I have only ever visited South Wales on business probably 100 times over 30 years but never with time for leisure activities :(

A raft of links here

Sadly it seems to have had a string(?) of arson attacks....reports on the official website. Shame on those that do such mindless criminality :mad::mad::mad:

Never understood why people burn things down. We were all young once - but don’t remember anyone burning anything to the ground.

Are they conveniently perched on sticks? :) - Quite looking forward to visiting now :)
Yes! If you sit quietly alongside the canal, you will see them darting up and down the canal and they perch on the branches looking for fish.
The post about arson is sadly true....the hide near one of the ponds was destroyed. You will see Kingfishers away from where any hides are though.

I'm probably too late for you replying here, as I guessing you are going this morning? I used to go there regularly, but like most places, since lockdown everyone and their dog now goes there. The 1st hide (steel one, so the tw@'s can't burn it down) is probably your best bet with 400mm as the perches there are relatively close, the 2nd hide has more scope, but the perches are too far away from the hide, however you'll get a better chance of seeing one of the foxes there. Walking the canal will give you more chances of seeing/photographing kingfisher's, so my advice would be , be prepared to be mobile, don't neglect the feeder stream that runs adjacent to the footpath, there's usually plenty to photograph along there. It get's quite busy in the hides, especially as it's bank holiday monday, so you may need to be prepared to wait for a seat to become available. Good luck.

Not too late at all - I’m not one to go places on bank holiday if I can avoid it - was thinking to go tomorrow or Wednesday :) I’m happy to wander and be mobile rather than just be in one place - so it’ll be good to explore. With the 100-400 (and possibly the 1.4 converter) I should get close enough - that’s good to know. He bought the lens with the intention to go down there but never made it - so I’ll have a go instead! It’s never been out of the house - so it’ll be a good first time use.

I’m not a big Facebook user - but thanks for the offer :) if it stays dry I’ll have a first wander down tomorrow or Wednesday and see what I can see. I’m sure if I get anything decent I’ll soon post it up here :)

I went down today for my first wander. It was quite overcast, and found there to be quite a few screaming kids - but other than that it was a very positive experience. There are two hides there - one looks new and all metal, and the other looks like it's been there a while, and made of wood. Didn't see a lot from either hide aside from a squirrel or two. Plenty of ducks, far too many pigeons, and although I saw a kingfisher fly past at the speed of light (far too quickly to get a photograph) I wasn't lucky to get one sat on a stick on this occasion :) I'll pop a separate thread up with some photos - but here's one just to give this thread a little colour - a squirrel impersonating a meerkat:

Seen some cracking pics from there over the years .stick with it

For the 3rd time in as many years, last night an arsonist has destroyed another hide there. He/she burnt down the second hide.

I have lifted these image off Faceache of this morning's discovery.

That's very disappointing to see :( and of course being so remote - there's no cameras anywhere near where they'll have any idea who did it.

Rotten scroates

What pleasure does anyone get from doing stuff like that? Pi**es me right off.
