when i bought my D40 - the owners manual was rubbish....printed in grey text !
have a look at "Nikon D40 Digital Field Guide (Paperback)" at Amazon Books <£10
well worth it ..............

Thanks for the welcome and the book suggestions I`ll look those up for sure, going by the quality of photos being posted on these forums I will need all the help I can get to up my game before I dare post any of my own shots

nah...post away...that's how people told me how to improve
only little hints here and there, but it all adds up and the D40 will deliver !!

I do find the 6MP sensor small when you crop and lose quality so I try and compose the shot so minimal cropping is required - my excuse for a D90 upgrade later !....

yesterday I used a 55-200 VR handheld at 200mm at 12feet for a blackbird and it turned out fine - difficult to get this close though !!
