Hello to all on what looks like a great forum.
To business...
I am needing advice on lighting for desktop macro work. I have been doing some fishing flies and would like to set them against a clean white background. I've got two 500 Watt tungsten lamps available, with a reflector and a diffuser if needed. I've also got a Speedlite with off-shoe cord, though it doesn't stretch far! I was trying it with the Speedlite lighting the white backboard and using one tungsten bulb to illuminate the fly. I've been playing around with the fully manual settings on both the camera (Canon 40D), and the Speedlite, but whenever I get them right for a white background (the backboard is about 2 feet behind the fly), the fly is not illuminated well, despite the 500 W lamp pointing straight at it from 2 feet away. To get the illumination of the fly right, I have to reduce the lighting of the backboard until it is grey, rather than white.
Example of finished effort...
The above was 0.5 sec @ f32, with the Speedlite on quarter power.
Would very much appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to arrange my lighting, and what sort of settings to use on the camera and Speelite so I can get a white background without losing detail on the subject.
Thanks,
Colin
