First of all apologies if this has been discussed in any other thread but I briefly searched for it and couldn't find one.

I am trying to get more familiarised and acquainted with hi-sync flash usage and apply it for various situations and I came across this page.
Seems pretty straightforward to me after experimenting the settings and for the first time starting to use the hi-sync feature on my 580EXII. Suddenly I feel "why the heck didn't I use this before?".

Just few quick questions please, although its not a major issue but more like of a curiosity level. I use a 7D and when using flash the iso setting automatically goes to 400. Now in "M" mode for example if I want to keep the SS at 500 and f-stop at 5.6 I notice my meter on the viewfinder completely disappearing to the left. Now I may be wrong here but I am assuming that this means that the image will be well underexposed and I am forced to bump up the iso manually as it just stays put at 400 even though I have set it up at "A".
Consequently I ended up exposing without touching the iso and found that the image was properly exposed. This boosted up my curiosity and I bumped the ss to 800 and then at 1000 and all images were equally and very similarly exposed while the aperture and iso remained similar.
My question is first of all, does this mean that the flash output (left at ETTL) is doing its job and compensating for the changes in the ss and aperture? Which seems very likely as I can't see any other justification.

Secondly, in similar situation is it better to expose at that fixed iso (400) or bump it up?

Thirdly and lastly please, does this mean that the meter in the viewfinder here is irrelevant for these particular instances? Or there are tweaks that I can do to take advantage of what its trying to show me.

Many thanks in advance.

Amin

NOTE: Apologies with the wording above "images were equally AND VERY SIMILARLY EXPOSED, exposers at shutter speeds 320, 400 and 640 were similar, or very close to each other but the one at 1000 although quite acceptable but definitely there is a very minor tweak to underexposed as the histogram is showing".
Just thought I better clarify this in case its taken the word "similarly" is taken very literally.
Thanks

Get this book. It will tell you all about high speed sync, how it works and its limitations. It will also tell you everything else you will want to know about Canon E-TTL flash and is very well written http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mastering-Canon-EOS-Flash-Photography/dp/193395244X

What you have discovered is entirely consistent. Yes, the flash is varying the power but HSS works the flash very hard and range is reduced. I think that's why the 7D might set a minimum of ISO400 (I'm not that familar with the 7D) though the handbook will confirm.

It's also why your 1/1000sec image is under exposed. Basically the flash is flat out and has run out of power. Unlike regular flash, HSS exposure varies with shutter speed and you've gone over the limit for that particular shooting situation. If you raise the ISO or use a lower f/number, you will bring the exposure down to a level where the flash can cope again before it runs out of puff.
