Hello there, I jenny and 18 and just getting in to photography. I was doing a bit of photography, just playing around, with my little samsung compact when i realised i had a bit of a knack.

So i got a Canon EOS 350D for my christmas 2009, but can't quite get to grips with it - indoors is fine and dandy but outdoors is totaly different - and i see so many FANTASTIC outdoor images with the same camera and wonder how you all do it? If anyone could help me out i'd be entirely gratefull, im at my wits end :bang:.

Thanks - newbie Jen

Hi Jen and welcome to TP.

Might be worth re-posting that question in 'Talk Basics' as this forum's all about saying Hi.

It's a matter of reading the manual and other books for the theory and then getting out there and learn by doing as it's the best way to get to know your camera. The composition's down to you though :)

There's plenty of help to be had from us on TP.

Oh ok. Thanks very much :). Sorry this is the first ever forum i've been on so not sure what to do. Thanks for the help.

Hi Jen,

Have a look here for some sensible advice about starting out and improving.

People often get frustrated when they get a new dSLR as they expect great photos to jump out of the camera. It is worth remembering that it all about light and composition. Trying to photograph in poor light is like swimming in treacle, possible but not a lot of fun.

Try going out just before sunset and just after sunrise and think about your composition, look for leading lines and foreground interest to give the photo 3 dimensions and you may surprise yourself.

Another thing I would really recommend is to take some of your photos and post them here for critique, then take the criticism and try to improve next time. It really helps!

Most of all, have fun, don’t expect too much too soon. Most people who’s photos you are admiring have been learning their art for years. Having said that the learning curve is steep and the process is fun.

Hi Jen, welcome to TP :D

If you see any images on here that you like, just ask how they were taken as I'm sure sure everyone will be happy to share their methods.

Also, you need to get shooting and get posting... it doesn't matter how good or bad you are, you'll learn from the comments people leave... after all, we're all "still" learning really...

Most of all, have fun!!

Hi Jenny, and :welcome: to TP.

A lot of good tips given here, I will not add to them .. suffice to say, take your time and learn at your own pace. There is always a learning curve with anything new. So, don't get frustrated .. just enjoy it

Yeah there is. Orkney is my home but I've moved down to be with my boyfriend.
