Hi, First of all. Thank you for spending your time and visiting my first thread.

My name is Luke. And I was spying on that forum for quite a while before I decided to write few words myself. I am not a photographer. Don't even consider myself as an amateur. I want to see whether its something that will keep me interested and entertained.

Few things about myself:
I'd like to master low key & wide angle portraits.
I follow Von Wong photography as I find that guy's work really interesting.
If I could reverse the time. I'd buy myself a compact 24-105 camera instead of going FF.
I hate 28mm.
I am building my first lighting setup.
I'm based in London.
I will not shoot boring nude.

Thank you! I'll be in your care.
Luke

Hi Luke!

Welcome!

I too have a Canon 5D Mark II - superb camera right?!

I will be honest, I have had my ups and downs with photography. But if you look in the photos critiques section and see the fantastic photographs that others have taken, it reminds me why I love photography!

Definitely go to the critiques section and talk about photographs. Trust me, when you can't take photographs this is an EXCELLENT way of building up your skills. I've learnt so much from this by looking at other people's mistakes and learning from them. Also a lot of people have links to their portfolio websites. By all means go on them, see what they've done and try to understand what makes those photographs superb.

And don't think about going down to a compact camera ;). Appreciate what you have :). I used to keep changing my camera etc, until I got this 5D mark II. I wouldn't change it for the world (well, for a 5D Mark III maybe ;) but I just don't need it, let alone can't afford it yet ). A canon 5D mark II is a stunning camera, I know a lot of people who say to me "John give me your 5D mark II" etc etc ;).

Anyway I won't keep going on.
But by all means, enjoy your stay! I love it here!

See you around,
John.

Hi guys thank you for a warm welcome.

John, that advice about critiques section is really handy! I'll definitely have a look there.
We will be fine with 5d mk2, won't we? :D There's plenty to learn about! What kind of pictures do you like taking most? Btw. You are from Bristol. There is that famous bench which was in Skins Tv series. Did you photograph it yet?

See you around!
Luke

Yep, the 5D mark II is a superb camera :). I barely have time to take photos unfortunately :(, but I like taking photos of people, so family, friends etc etc. Unfortunately don't watch skins hehe - again never really had the time.

Want to start taking more photos. I remember me and a few relatives went to this zoo, and my Uncle managed to have a snake put around his neck and asked me to take a photo. I used to think Manual was what the experts shot in, so I kept my camera in manual and adjusted the aperture, shutter speed etc so this took a while. He was like "JOHN!!!! Hurry" haha. So morale of this story: don't think that manual is the way to go. Know how to shoot in manual, but don't, is what I like to say.

So get into photography :), find modes for situations. Don't disregard the automatic modes though. I was watching this video about wedding photography, he took superb photographs, seriously, his portfolio is just amazing. He then told me that he shot the entire wedding day in P mode. Same story with all his weddings.

So to conclude: know how to shoot manual, but don't unless you really have to. Get out there, take photos, make mistakes. So many times I've stopped myself from going out there because I was worried I would make mistakes, but so what? Unless you make mistakes, you'll never learn ;).

You have a HUGE range of expert photographers on here, show them your photographs, learn from them. This is an advantage you have (and a very good advantage) over photographers who just want to take pictures and don't care about what others think.

Just some advice to get you started :).

Have fun! And stick around! :)
