Hi,

I've been asked to photograph a charity casino event for my friend.

http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/news...norfolk_woman_to_realise_her_dreams_1_1012557

I think I will try and set up a little area to do studio-ish photos of people as they come in, and then later in the night I will walk around and take more candide photos of people enjoying the casino night.

The problem is that I think we will sell more photos if we can produce them on the night. I can source the mounts ok, but I don't have a printer that I trust, or that will work fast enough.

Can anyone give me some advice on how I should go about operating this? Or what printer I ought to use?

Thanks :)

Thanks! I'll google that printer to see how much it costs later...I don't suppose i can rent them...?

I think I'm going to have to bribe an assistant or two, doesn't look like a one person job really :-)

Printers used by Event Photographers tend to print faster than this, withthe latest ones doing a 6x9" print in approx 16 seconds.

There are a few event photgraphers on the site, who will no doubt fill you in on the details.

Thanks! Did I post this in the best place to catch them?

Maybe the Business section Lowryn.

Firstly well done for identifying your needs. So many people in your shoes would try to make do with what equipment they have and make a complete hash of it.

My first piece of advice would be to try and track down an event photographer in your area awho knows what he/she is doing and share the costs/profit. If this is not appealing for you then my suggestion to make the evening a success you will need the following setup.

1. Studio background and two lights minimum.
2. wifi or tethered shooting to ensure speed of transfer for customers to view.
3. At least one laptop for editing plus monitor attached for customer viewing.
4. On site printing with dye sub printer. These can be hired from Photomart in London.
5. Strut mounts and clear faced bags also purchased from Photomart.
6. Assistant to handle the sales side.

If you have any plans to shoot and just upload to website, forget it. People will just use you for entertainment. Another possibility would be to mail out after the event but this will affect your sales. Also worth checking with the organiser and venue that you have suficient space and access to powerpoints. Do not just turn up on the night thinking its all organised as it very rarerly is!

Hope this helps :)

Thanks snapzz, that is brilliant advice. I have thought about contacting an event photographer that did something similar at a hen night I attended recently.
I have the lights...I have the laptop, I have the camera, but it pretty much ends there.

Got some investigating to do!

Yes please :( I've had a crisis of confidence and am thinking about handing it over to an event photographer that is keen to do it. Sad thing is, I'd love to do it, but the printing etc is worrying me

You could hand it over to the event photographer if the crisis in confidence is too great but, include a caveat that you come along as a 2nd photographer to see how it works.
Then next time you get the chance you will hopefully have the printer and the confidence.

Ach sod it all.

My friend called me to say they've found an event photographer with his own printer to do the portraits, but would I do the informal photos.
I'll have to swallow my pride and ask the photographer very nicely if I can help him so that I can get some work experience.

Thanks for all your advice. Maybe next time I'll be better placed to do it all myself.

ah sorry to hear that Nikki.

I would have helped out with the Photography side as can get my grubby paws on all the "studio" stuff.

Had been thinking about it but couldn't find a workaround with the printing side of things, especially as you are doing it as a favour to help out, i.e. cost of hiring etc becomes prohibitive.
