Hi! I am really hoping you guys can help me a little.
I am currently a 3rd year student at University and am beginning to plan out the dreaded final year dissertation.
I hope for it to be based around the ethics of retouching images starting with a response to Doves Campaign for Real Beauty.
One chapter shall highlight the pros of photo editing for example The skills involved in the kind of work, and its use in successful advertising.
The second chapter shall highlight the cons of photo editing for example The unrealistic portrayal of women, low self esteem, and statistics involving the increase of eating disorders in children.
For my third chapter I intend to document the results of my own research by recording survey and presentation results.
I have previously created a focus group on face book regarding the topic and was surprised to see how many young adults are unaware of the amount of editing that goes on behind the scenes. I hope to use some of their comments in this section.
I also work at a primary school and have considered creating a presentation for the children where they can chose between an edited and unedited photograph which one they prefer and why.
I intend my argument to be towards the lack of unbiased education out there regarding the retouching that reaches most every aspect of the media today. Though the Real Beauty Campaign by Dove appears on the outside to be doing something positive, its main intention is to sell its products. The six slightly larger women that appeared in the first advertisement a few years ago were supposedly happy with their appearances but were actually marketing skin firming lotion. If the women were truly happy, why would they need a lotion or potion to change?
Doves parent Unilever a global manufacturer ironically also sells Slim-fast, and is responsible for the Linx adverts that clearly focus on the typical Western stereotype of beauty that Dove is supposed to be fighting against.
After a meeting with my lecturer he has advised me to relate this work and idea of beauty to the Theory of Form by Plato and The Theory of the Sublime by Kant.
Having spent the afternoon trying to get my head around these I am quite utterly confused.
Could anyone offer a simple explanation of these by Plato and Kant?
Thank you and hello!
