Hi, new here so thought I'd say hello. :D

I got a compact at the start of July - Sony HX5 - and have found photography totally fascinating and want to learn more!

So I'm going to get a DSLR in the next couple of months - still looking around, not decided on make or model yet.... some on the shortlist are Canon 550D, Nikon D5000 or D90...

Any advice, suggestions or comments welcome.

Have a look around the internet and get a shortlist of cameras. Then go to your local camera store, jessops, etc. and actually try them out hand's on.

No point picking up a camera based just on specification, as you may not like the "feel" of it.

You'll also have to decide what factors are important to you, e.g. do you swivel viewing screen, etc.

When you're decided on the camera, come back here and look for posts relating to that camera.

Also, don't forget to think about lens. Kit lens will start you off, but you'll then want to progress to other lens.

Lastly, don't be afraid to buy second hand, especially on this forum, as TP members look after their gear.

Thanks! Excellent advice and I've already started on that route. A couple weeks ago I tried holding various models in Currys - and then a friend offered to lend me a D90 for two weeks to try which has been extremely helpful in letting me get a feel for using a DSLR. Have to give it back this weekend though!

In terms of handling, I like the fact that the 550D is lighter, but then I also like the top LCD screen of the D90 and in general I think I prefer the ergonomics...

I would consider second hand if I knew the camera was in good condition, it would be a great way to start off.

:thumbs::thumbs: Top advice

Buy the one you are comfortable with, that is within your budget. All manufacturers produce excellent kit, some people will swear that brand "x "is better than brand "y" but it boils down to personal choice.

Bear in mind the upgrade path if thats what you want to do as well:thumbs:

2nd hand kit will get you more bang for your money and peeps on here do look after their kit and you can usually get a hell of a camera etc for your money.

And the most important thing is ENJOY it:naughty::lol:

Thanks - just realised there is a for sale section on the forum - will keep an eye on that. :D
