Hi there gang,

nice to see such a big forum of camera lovers..

anyways.

Heres my predicament...

I am in a few months travelling to the USA and the amazon... I am looking to buy my very first DSLR to capture this trek on photo and to give it the justice it deserves.

Heres the thing though...

I am looking for a camera that can

1.Take nice landscape shots
2.Take okay Portrait shots
3. I keep and sell snakes which i would like to photograph
4. Would love to be able to photograph some wild life
5. And lastly i work as a pro sports coach... so guess what... i would like the ability to do that

Now as if that wasnt enough, i am on a relatively tight budget.... i mean im happy to build up different lenses n stuff. I am by no means wanting world class quality. ... but if i dont get an slr its the camera on my phone instead.

So any help.... i am literally a total noob so please speak slowly.lol. :thinking:

i tink you should get a second-hand fujifilm s9600 instead of an SLR unless you know how a camera works and you are really into photography, which i will say go to a shop and handle them.before you do that try and pick a camera model that will suit your needs and pick one from every camera brand and then try 'em out at a shop.

See i really wanna get into photography as a hobby to be honest

I have a cam that i use.... but its really not ideal.

A few of the images ( especially ) the sports ones will probably be getting used in conjunction with sports articles that i sometimes write for a local newspaper.

Was really SLR i am after.... as i think thats where i am gonna end up anyway if you know what i mean

But then i am sure the forumites here no best... i am open to all suggestions.

Hi and welcome to TP

firstly any of the entry levels SLRs will take the pics your after, its knowing how to use it, so hang around and read some threads.

secondly the lens you put on the front will make a difference to what your shooting
but if you cant afford to buy the ones you need right now look at hiring them - Lenes for hire (aka stewart on here) might be an easier option.
 
Whatever DSLR camera body you buy, you're not going to be able tackle all those situations you describe without a selection of lenses. Being able to swap lenses is one of the big advantages of a DSLR and one of tne main reasons for getting one. The body is just the start of tailoring a system to your particular needs.
 
any camera body and an 18-200mm in my opinion

granted it's not the best at any of the jobs but apart from macroish stuff it'll do ok at most of the things you want

which 18-200 depends on which body you go for which is dependant on your budget and stuff :)
 
have you a figure in mind would help when looking around for you

Welcome to the forum, MPB Photoraphic advertise on the first page of the forum and they sell second and equipment.

At the moment they have Canon and Nikon bodies and Lenses available but it depends on what you want to spend really.

You mention going to the Amazon what are the conditions there will you be wanting to ensure the camera has weather sealing or are you not intending to take images in poor conditions.

You could for example get a robust Nikon body like the D200 (Weather sealed) and a 17-50mm lens from MPB but that would run you to 578.00.

It all depends on what you are wishing to spend...

Are people really suggesting that a beginner takes an SLR, with multiple lenses, and the need to clean a sensor on a regular basis, in to the Amazon?

:bang:

Get a Fuji S100FS. Trade it in for an SLR when you've outgrown it.
