Just discovered the forum today! I've had an interest in photography for many years now, though never followed it through at a serious level. That said, I have had some shots published in a UK magazine - I'm a writer by trade, so they went along with the photos I supplied unless they were really dodgy..! 
I'm with the compact digital brigade at the mo. May upgrade to a DSLR, but not in any rush at the mo. In the good ole' days it was a Canon A1 SLR...until I dropped it that is
