Afternoon all

I have a question regarding the Nikon D300, I am thinking of upgrading from my D200, I have seen the battery grip increases the frame rate to 8fps, which would be very useful to me as I love airshows.

However do I need to get the optional EN-EL4 battery to get 8fps? Or will the standard EN-EL3 do it?

Thanks in advance guys

No the EN-EL3 will not do it.

you will need the EN-EL4 with the replacement tray or a set or two of AA rechargeables.

The grip comes with the tray for AA but not the EL4

Get some of those rechargeables that hold a long charge i.e. can sit in a bag for upto a year after charging and still have 80% or more charge when you need them.

Remeber the EL4 charger costs the GDP of a small country, well not quite :)

thanks for the reply, I've already got about 12 decent rechargeables and a 15minute charger so thats not a problem, until i get the EN-EL4

I see what you mean about the charger

Remember though that the 15 min chargers really do eat into the capacity of the batteries, especially with a poor quality charger.

I've recently bought a Maha C9000 Wizard One charger, used it to charge Eneloops at a rate of 200 mAh. With your 15 minute charger, you're probably putting 1500/2000 mAh through them which severely affects their lifespan.

Re low self-discharge batteries, Sanyo Eneloops are one of the best at keeping their charge when not in use, even in cold conditions...

thanks for that information fella I never knew that about the fast chargers.

The EL4 one you mean?

yeah!

ignore me

One thing nobody factors in with the EL4a batteries is the shooting time between charges. Even bashing away at 8fps you'll still take a couple of thousand shots before the battery runs out. Best bet is to look for a second hand charger on ebay etc then buy a new Nikon battery ( don't buy the fakes, false economy )

Thanks for the advice, Pete

I only use genuine batteries anyway.

Just need a job now to finance it

Don't see many of the chargers on Ebay but the batteries are reasonably priced from HK - genuine ones that is.

Oh and remember you only get the hi FPS if you shoot in 12 bit 14 bit severely limits the FPS
